Quit before being fired

Is it better to quit befor you're about to be fired? Or Wait to be fired and take severance?

Fired. Severance pays benefits and usually a pay out unless you violate policy. Also, employers can’t legally ask why you left from you or your former employer.

there's no legal implications to asking. companies usually don't just tell other than your dates

Zendesk ZenDiagram Jan 25, 2020

Pretty sure that's not true, I've never heard that it's illegal to ask someone why they left a job and I've been through interview training at three different companies. Also I've never heard of a company that pays severance when you're fired, the only instances I've heard of them paying it is when a firing is disguised as a layoff.

Totally depends on the situation. I work in HR. Sometimes it's better to put in the 2 weeks to save face

Save face? Either way you lose your job might as well take the 600 per week until you get your next.

HR only represents the company's view. Not the worker's. Severance all the way!

Facebook GuzF53 Jan 25, 2020

Ditto. You are losing your job. Saving face won’t pay your bills or help you. And there are easy ways to explain why you left your last job And bgrishenko, what would you do? Give advice on what you would do and not the HR answer

Literally what I just did, put in my 2 weeks at Instacart since I was going to be let go. Allowed me the time to properly transition my work, talk to hiring managers, get leads for new roles etc. Theres a benefit to giving your two weeks

Wayfair TCAboveAll Jan 25, 2020

Lol so you helped the company that was going to let you go and saved the company your severance pay. Nice!

What kind of question is that? Do you like getting free money or not?

Microsoft h.a.l.l. Jan 25, 2020

Depends on what you want to do next. If you just want to wipe the slate and get back in in a few months, then put in your notice and go meet hiring managers with open headcount. If you need unemployment, or don't have next steps lined up, then wait it out.

Fired and take severance

Zendesk ZenDiagram Jan 26, 2020

I'm not sure why everyone on Blind thinks you get severance when you're fired. I would think long and hard before taking that advice unless you're actually referring to a layoff. I know multiple people who've gotten fired and received no severance. I also know for a fact hiring managers look at someone who's been fired as a much higher risk than someone who has quit or someone who's been laid off. Are you on a PIP? If they have a PIP in place they likely will just fire you and not even worry about framing it as restructuring (this is usually only done to avoid lawsuits if their case for firing isn't well documented).
