Posting for a friend who doesn't have blind and recently joined tech. My friend moved from the east coast to the Bay Area. He had gotten a much better offer after he started at his new job (80k more) and now wants to know if there is a way to quit and take that offer without burning bridges. I told him that the Bay Area is a small place and he might run into these people in the future. But he wants a second opinion. Anyone has any words or wisdom or have encountered similar issues in the past? How did it play out? Edit: first 4 responses below are in favor of going with the higher offer. This is very surprising to me but I respect the opinion of the majority. Any suggestions what reason he can use? I personally don't see how he can spin this
It’s fine. It won’t burn a bridge, all those people would do the same.
80k more... Burn that bridge
Burn the bridge, soon he'll have enough TC to erect a new bridge if he wants, only this time it will be named after him
$80k is enough to burn bridges over. I’ve burned them over $50k
How about over 15k more. It's also that my current job is dead end in terms of professional growth. New job is comparatively better.
I think it's perfectly okay to leave a job for 15k. But the issue is this guy has only been on the job for a couple of weeks!
Employment is a transaction. This whole talk about bridges is nonesense.
Did he get a bonus he needs to repay? Did the pay relocation costs? California is an at-will employment state. He should take the offer. During the exit interview, just tell them that she got an offer from someone who was in his pipeline for significantly more.
Relocation was minor and he doesn't care about that. He just started and hasn't even received his first paycheck yet. I think my question is more about how can he quit without looking like a complete asshole. I do think relationship matters and God forbid his current employer will call his next employer and tell them about this little stunt
There is no reason to say where is he going to go, can keep that information for himself.
The bridge will undoubtedly be burned and as you mentioned, stuff does get around. Companies will worry about him being loose in the pocket and he will be seen as a risk. How many companies will hear/find out? Who knows. However, if he has a reason for leaving the company that isn’t related to money, he can explain the change as the job not being a fit. But the job needs to actually not be a fit.
I said the same thing to him! He hasn't even really started working and is still in bootcamp. So I don't think the bad fit excuse will fly.
$80K is a lot of money to stick around with the employer and he will also not have the same motivation thinking he left $80K on the table. That’s $360K on the table assuming he doesn’t get any raises in 4 years! There is nothing called “burning the bridge”. Look after yourself...
Burn it. 80K is certainly career / life changing money. The bridge on the other hand is all speculative .
Ask him to take new offer. Wait until the background check is done.
It’s perfectly alright to look out for oneself - everyone understands. Take the offer and move.
