Quitting right after promotion

I’m currently on track to being promoted in Q1. I’m not a big fan of my team or Amazon and planning on leaving soon. I have a couple offers from mid-tier startups and planning to jump ship soon—but the timeline to jump would be pretty much right after the promotion. Is this a bad idea? Should I just jump ship before the promotion? Stay one more month? Only reason for staying longer is to pad resume with the SDE II title. Thoughts? TC:140

What? Why?

Qualtrics St🅰️rfish Jan 10, 2021

Lot of admin work goes into being promoted. Plus there are a limited number of promos typically per team/org, and the team would essentially waste one on someone who is leaving.

If this is an IC role, you should be fine.

Charter woSQ70 Jan 6, 2021

Why would it matter if you're IC or not?

Synopsys naturebuoy Jan 6, 2021

If you get promoted from IC to manager and leave within a week, you for sure will burn bridges.

My last job I got promoted, a big bonus, told not to go anywhere, then a month later I put in my 2 weeks. Dive and save was still 1/2 TC. The director said the promotion and bonus was for past work and I should do what is best for me and my family. I wish he left with me...

Fuck. Sounds like an amazing person.

I had a head of product say the same thing to me. He talked the talk but didn't think he'd walk the walk when the time came. He did, congratulated me on getting a better offer, and got me two weeks of garden leave so I could start the second job during my notice period. There are some really good managers out there.

I’d wait for the promotion if you really feel confident you’ll get it

Don’t worry, it’s super common

You definitely WANT the promotion. It gives a much stronger resume and sets a higher salary bar for new jobs. It’s totally normal to leave right after a promo. In no way is doing this taboo. The company would fire you in a second if it made business sense.

Amazon error2 Jan 7, 2021

How does that impact your resume? People outside Amazon don't care what level you're at. What you did and what you know is what matter the most.

Amazon sassursaas Jan 7, 2021

They do care, especially if it’s an SDE1->2 promo, it shows you were able to adapt to a demanding commercial environment and become an independent contributor. Hiring managers and recruiters look at your promotion trajectory as a signal of your ability and potential. If you are an SDE 2 at a (reasonably) reputable shop like amazon , it is much more likely you’ll be brought in as an SDE 2 in your new job. You also have more leverage in salary negotiations.

Try to get the promo but dont let that stop you from pursuing your opportunities. The promo is only a title and potentially a carrot to hold you in place for a time. Try to time it well but do what is best for you, promo aside.

Amazon dFKd74 Jan 7, 2021

If you’re for sure going to get promoted, I’d wait until after it is finalized. In the event you do boomerang in the next 6 months, you’ll be hired at the promo level instead of the one you’re at now.

Amazon gambino! OP Jan 8, 2021

When you say “finalize” is that once phonetool is updated?

Amazon Wilkensus Jan 10, 2021

Its usually April 1st

I don’t think the title change would mean much if you’re only at that level for a short time. If there’s a pay increase to go along with it, though, it could help you negotiate a higher salary for your next role.
