Singapore long term immigration

Feb 13 24 Comments

Heyy ya’all,

Curious about long term immigration prospects in Singapore. Did anyone did or look into this. We are an Indian couple with 8 yoe in the US and have a 2 year old daughter. Looking to immigrate to Singapore cause of its vicinity to India but we weren’t sure about a PR or other long term staying prospects there. Can anyone shed some light on their process?

Thank you

Don’t move to Singapore. You’ll lose out on salary, opportunities , you won’t get PR and you’ll get Racism for free.

It’s expensive and if you lose job you’ll be back to India. Try countries which have better immigration like Canada, Europe or Australia.

Nothing is cheap, cars, housing, clothes. You’ll be stuck in 25 mile city in a hot humid weather always leaving you longing to travel out.

Schooling will cost you $2k per month per kid for Indian or mediocre school,$3/4k per month for international school. Foreigners do not have any chance in public schools.

Only thing which is cheap is food: chicken rice , pork and Chinese food stalls sell food at $3-8 per meal. Not sure if it’s worth making a move just for food. Most of these food stalls have hygiene rating of B or C. A rated stalls are usually $8 or more. Not many tell you why it’s cheap (rampant cases of food poisoning)

My TC remains the same from the USA. All of the countries you mentioned above have at least 50% paycut on top of more taxes.

Yes singapore is expensive but overall what you can save is a lot more than you can in Europe or Canada or Australia.

Are you saying Meta pays same as Bay Area or Seattle in USD equivalent in SGD?

Other countries i mentioned have clear path to citizenship in 3-5 years. The tax maybe comparable to US, but you get free schooling, free healthcare , retirement and unemployment benefits.

Hi there I’m a Singaporean. Getting a PR in Singapore is extremely difficult and even more so as an Indian because a lot of Indians apply for it (there’s a ratio of PRs given to Indians vs Chinese vs caucasians). Having said that getting an employment pass should be easier and if Microsoft is willing to transfer you that would be your best bet. In Singapore, while it’s harder to get a PR as a Chinese or Indian national, it helps if your salary is > 20,000 SGD per month as the government values highly skilled jobs more. If you’re a software engineer etc your skills may be even more valued so it all helps

  • 10th year in Singapore. Went to school here, got married here, had a child here. Stable job, pay taxes, have made investments in retirement funds and have been contributing to Gov back NGO's for 8 years. TC is almost half a million a year (though the Gov doesn't see stock as income, so as far as they're concerned it's more like 400k), household income almost double. 3 applications, 3 rejections. There are no rules, there are no reasons and there is no logic. I had a housemate who applied after being in his first job for 3 months and he got it, you'll see several people who have been here decades who haven't. Generally having a son helps big time, but beyond that there is no formula. It's a horrible feeling knowing that you're being denied a stable, long term future simply based on the color of your skin and passport. But who is going to care? No one.

Come to Singapore to make decent money, pay low taxes and feel like you've touched the first world for a while. If you want long term stability - this is not the bet to make.

    • Don't take it otherwise, I was just trying to reason your rejection which is guess work only. We all know that SG PR is a black box process and you can never be sure of anything. My two cents - always have plan B and C ready if you're playing this game, especially if you're an Indian in IT field. Remember persistence is not the key here.

    • I know mate, sucks balls. We're trying to move now, it's been long enough here. Not to mention the fact that COVID brought out the worst in Singapore, and that despite all this time here it's never felt less like home. Yes rules are relaxing, but what how they behaved in 2020 showed true colors. It's been great, but now it's enough. Will figure next move soon.

  • I guess I've been in the same boat before. 10 years in Singapore now. PR application rejected like 3 times. Now thinking of moving elsewhere to 'settle down'.
So if you are looking to get a PR/Citizenship then you're better off moving elsewhere.

marmah - whats your TC and Salary. Wondering if salary being less than 20k per month affects this pr decision (as someone pointed out / guessed in the uber thread)

    • JNSx07 - You can apply after 6 months of working here.

skfks- My TC is less that 20k. But I know some ED's in JPMC who are still in employment pass. So there is no guarantee you'll get a PR based on 20K+ in comp.
