      here's the thing - external hires need much more YOE for respective levels. 5 YOE at Google can easily be L5, but we bring in external 7 YOE at L3 and 11 YOE at L4 ( true story, saw with my own eyes )

    Google has been lowballing a lot these days. If you have competing offers then use those as leverage, if not you can think about whether you are okay with what you are being offered and if it does not feel like a step backwards for you.

      Yes FB , that’s what likely happened

      HC decisions aren’t changed

      Prior to HC , you can interview for higher levels

      If you are happy with the salary, you should consider it. You'll not have a lot of responsibility and everyone will be impressed with everything you do.

    You are a fool if you accept L4 with 10 YoE. Period. They are trying to take advantage of you by putting you into a lower-level role, as they usually do. The company has only gotten away with doing this for so long because people like us let them. For instance if msft offered you L61 with 10 YoE, you’d shut them down before they even finished telling you the full offer lol. It’s borderline disrespectful that Google is offering you what is typically earned as a new grad with 2 YoE or a PhD new grad with 0 YoE. Clearly they think you’re a sucker who is willing to take that.

    Level depends on your interview performance. You must have failed the system design round, else they would have offered you L5.

    I joined google as L4 with 6.5 years of work ex, but was promoted to L5 in 2 years. So if you do well, you can get to L5 in less than 2 years.

      Didn’t get L5 doesn’t mean failed. It could be recruiter set him for L4 interview to begin with. Even if he aced it, he’d get better offer at best. I don’t buy that get promote in less than 2 years BS. I was promoted L4-L5 in 1.5 years, but why should be career and pay be reset by that much when there’s simply something wrong with our hiring process?

    This always comes up. Years of Experience != Level

    What is important is
    * How you did in your interview
    * Your achievements
    * Current role

    When we interview, we evaluate at target level +/-1. Interviewers will provide feedback what they think the demonstrated capabilities were, HC reads all packets and decides a level.

    Stop thinking yoe=level.

    You could be a VP at your current company of 10 people, doesn't mean you are VP for Google, heck, you'd be L5 manager probably

    • @Google, ever since I became 63 and now I am 64, I am designing 60-70% of the time and trust me the design reviews are brutal with principals and partner reviewing it. The org I am in , people start designing from sde 2 onwards and everyone from partner below in the org stack is looking at it and actively reviewing it. Every small feature consists of why and how design docs justifying every small things we do. I don't know what team you were in but most of the teams in azure have strict design guidelines because of the focus on fundamentals unless of course you are in some cxp and stupid org.
