This idea seems so unheard of outisde of government where it is pretty normal (normal because congress always backpays which private employers dont do) .

It seems like every company now is normalizing furloughs because its the easy way out for them when previously this would never happen at a private company. Previously they had to make tough calls around either a lay off or keeping on payroll. But i feel with furloughs it just incentivizes employers to get rid of people whenever they feel like even more so than a layoff. additionally there is less legal risk to them of lawsuits because the job never went away .

mark my words even when the recession is over employers will try to furlough for 1 month when business hets soft. what do you guys think? is this a trend employees should be worried of?

  • Layoffs are much better because you get severance and can start looking for a company that is healthy and growing. Furloughs are a CFO scam.

How will you find healthy and growing company during recession?
The businesses that are not affected also slow down hiring or freeze it.

Then they should have given severance and given every employee a rehire preference commitment if things got back okay. That’s what the decent thing to do would have been

Severance? The whole point is that these companies are cash poor. I think everyone needs to remember that their employment is ultimately at-will. If you don’t want to be dependent on someone else, go start your own company then.

Get real. This is America. There will never be any regulation for something like this when there are far more pressing issues

Furloughs mean they can lower compensation en masse as part of their rehiring agreement. They also mean no severance and you probably lose any promotion etc lined up. Companies should be banned from furloughing unless they give a written guarantee of rehire by certain date at same comp which will never happen
