What is it like being a PM at Goldman (reputation within company, work life balance, career growth, etc.)? Appreciate any insight!

  • I’ve been a PM in their private wealth division for two years. Everyone I work with across product, tech, and design are all very smart and capable people. The concept of product management is still new within Goldman, though I can’t really speak for Marcus if that is where you’re looking. W/L balance depends on where in the product lifecycle you are. Big launch? Steady state?

Each PM seems to cover a lot of different things, so there is a fair amount of work to do. People regularly talk about how we’re a lean organization in terms of staffing. I’ve found management to be respectful of your time and limits, though. Career growth? Who knows. Presumably just taking on more and more responsibility.

I always assumed being a PM at a bank is not valued, just like being in finance at a tech company, am I misguided here?

    • Idk. Do you mean within the division you work or overall? If you think of a division like Marcus who is going to be more valued? It’s not like there are traders responsible for the P&L. Product, technology and design are all essential to the success of the business.

If you mean overall... no one is walking around going “oh you’re in product and not a hot shot trader/investment banker like me?” The two groups of people would never interact.
