My roommate was laid off and got into uber eats recently. Everyday he comes home and talks about how much tip he gets. For example, $5 on a $15 meal, $10 on a $30 meal, $15 on a $50 meal.
I feel these tips are outrageous. I know uber eats already builds 10-15% surcharge into a delivery menu and then charges $5-10 delivery fee. Why would I pay another 20%+ on top of all that.
Usually, I add a flat tip based on how far the drive is, regardless of how much the meal costs. It is usually $1 for every mile driven by the delivery person. If I order many dishes, I will also add $1-2 because they are heavier to carry. My roommate thinks I am a cheap stick.
Are we really supposed to pay that much tip to uber eats? Or is my roommate tricking me into tipping more so they will benefit?
EDIT: after reading the comments, I will not order uber eats any more. I cannot justify paying $60 all together for a $30 meal. I will drive to pick up by myself.

But yeah pickup is the cheapest route, if you want to pay the minimum.
You're effectively paying a personal servant and getting off cheap.
