idc about TC anymore, i would just like to fulfill my childhood dreams how do I go about achieving this? I have 7 YOE, 3 in a C++/Objective C/Swift, and 4 in full stack with js and python backends. not sure if thats enough exp to work on “embedded” or actual instruments/devices. I’m not asking to work on the space shuttle, but writing some code to parse data from some light sensors for a robot that will go underwater etc projects like this. How much more exp do I need and how do I prep? Should I just cold apply to JPL in Pasadena? Which location works on the most “interesting” things? I have a lot of questions like this.... if anyone can give any info at all please share.
Citizen/ Green card holder?
I have a friend who works for NASA. Says it's gravy. Apply online. Helps to have a ME or a degree in Physics.
You probably need security clearance (citizenship is a prerequisite), then you'll have to interview (much different than FAANG, e.g. attire is important, etc.), and you're in. The hard part is to get an interview, because there are not many open positions.
Actually the bit about needing citizenship is not true (ex-Nasa contractor here who was on H1B) if they need you to work on ITAR stuff and you are not an US person they can get your an ITAR license
And I want to be the President
You ok with 80k salary at NASA?
Yep
I give you much respect friend!
How about SpaceX
It’ll be easy to get a job. They are running many projects and recruiters are all over LinkedIn trying to fill roles. You may be working on an “interesting” project but the work you would do will be very mundane o can promise
Is all the cool stuff outsourced to contractors these days?
Not necessarily but a very small group of ppl do the cool stuff (R&D). Everyone just sustaining the archaic platforms is the bulk of the job
Why don't you ask them? NASA is mainly science stuff. JPL is more of a mix. I think it's more likely that (at least initially) you will find a job on a contract, working for some company who's delivery a module to JPL.
Good luck man, love the idea. Honestly if there wouldnt be prerequsite of citizenship I would do it too..
Honestly i was thinking about SpaceX the most, but still NASA feel like much more exciting place then european counterpart of it
Yep ESA, Jaxa, ISRO, CNSA You only think Nasa is most exciting due to marketing and the media. If you research other groups you will see they have caught-up or leading in some specializations. Most US work is not done at Nasa but they wrap it under their brand. But definately SpaceX for hands-on eng.
Love this
+1 props to the op for this awesome idea
