Has your personal life been negatively impacted by your engineering career?

Have you ever felt your ability to interact with normal or nontechnical people has been hindered, by your STEM/engineering career?

If yes, please comment:
What do you feel you have given up, if anything, in exchange for the ability to solve technical problems?

  • I found it very tough to find dates because (a) of a very low natural interaction rate with women in STEM because few women go into it. (b) Outside of STEM I struggled to find intelligent women who I could respect.

    • Maybe I just didn’t hangout with the right non-stem people, but non-stem for the most part lack basic forms of common sense, patience, and are impulsive. I guess my definition of intelligence is wrong above...stem folk have to go through more rigor to be successful, hence they are more likely to have those qualities.

Yeah, and as a non-STEM person, I would have been turned off by a person who didn’t know the objective form of who is whom. And was kind of pompous and ridiculous, to boot. Oy.

A girl I briefly dated had MBA from top schools. When the topic of salary was mentioned, she said she doesn't believe engineers get paid that much (250k) not sure if she was just saying shit or honestly believed engineers are dirt poor

Doesn't matter how much ppl make if they spend like the poor (car, clothes, hair, etc). Others judge by spending b/c that's what's visible.

  • Yes, it so hard being me. I’m way overpaid compared to other professions that require same, if not more schooling. The work I do saves humanity. I don’t know how to interact with other ppl cause I chose to never learn to...
