Is there anyone here from the US that moved abroad to work as SWE, research SWE, or research scientist positions?

Nearing the end of my PhD in comp sci. Have interned at Google Research, MSR, and FAIR under some big names. Good pub record. Etc.

I'll likely have good offers in the US, but I'm looking for a change. I've travelled a lot, sometimes for months at a time, to many other countries. Always wanted to live abroad, and I figure now might be the time to go for it when I finish the PhD.

I'm considering Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, South Korea (holy crap, I'm apparently biased toward countries beginning with S...), Taiwan or Japan.

Should I expect a large drop in expected TC, or is it fairly reasonable? Given my vague track record, would I be highly sought after or would it be the same struggle as it is vying for US based positions? Is it better to jump right in, or get a job in the US then transfer? If the latter, let's say I'm with Google/Microsoft, how long do you have to wait before you can request transfer and is it a guarantee you can (pending good performance, etc.), or does it involve random factors?

Any insight or advice for good resources on this would be much appreciated. The majority of info I find regarding this topic is for English teachers or non-phds, so I'm not sure how relevant it is to my situation.

Avoid Singapore. Pay is abysmal compared to COL. You'll get better deal literally anywhere. You could become a professor in nus NTU in which case you could get paid handsomely and some more

Interesting! I had actually wanted to attend NTU or NUS for study abroad durinf undergrad, but ended up in Japan instead.

In the US, I have zero interest in becoming a professor, but I never considered this possibility for overseas. Any rough idea for TC being a prof at NTU/NUS?

Associate professor I think is 15-20 k USD, professors are much more

Plus you get University accomodation which is a good deal

There are some other new universities like SUTD. Not sure how it works there

Google has an office in Switzerland and Microsoft has a research group in Cambridge, UK. You can get a job in either and try to transfer after a year or interview directly with the remote locations. There is likely a big drop in TC. In Europe most research is done in universities, so not many big companies hiring for cutting edge research. A lot of universities though, if that’s what you are into.

Ah, that's really good to know. Unfortunately, I have zero interest in academia (although, this is based on my experience in academia in the US and maybe it's different in Europe). Thanks!
