Corporate Banking vs Commercial Banking career path

Mar 5 3 Comments

I want to lean on everyone’s expertise here to see whether corporate banking or commercial banking banker has better career path ( both within banking or exit opportunities) and salary growth? I’m currently an associate with ~4yrs YOE in underwriting/credit analysis, but want to pursue a different career path that can utilize past experience.

For sure. For both roles, find a position at large balance sheet bank, as they have the best training, resources, and compensation. Commercial Banking will be a 9:00 to 5:00/6:00 job, and Corporate Banking is a 9:00 to 8:00/9:00 job, with major spikes during live deals.
Both jobs pay well, through the latter will offer significantly more, and you may be staffed on some very interesting deals. The trade off is the work-life balance which is worse, and the role being quite difficult to land (due to lack of spots).
    Best of luck!

Corporate banking is more respected as they deal with larger clients and public companies. People have went to corporate banking to IB then propelled their career after that. If you’re into IB….seems like a decent route.

I use to work at a Federal Reserve Bank. Opportunity to move up was insane. Caveat? The pay is atrocious, but the benefits are awesome!
