Negotiate promotion

May 20, 2016 16 Comments

My mentor who is from Google recommended that I negotiate my promotion. I am entry level and this is first promotion, but I had 2 years of experience before MS including Google.

Have any of you negotiated promotion? I already negotiated my comp up by 30k when I joined < 1yr ago. I don't want to look like an asshole.

no, read properly. OP disliked his team and project and couldnt change teams for a year. Your suggestion was for him to stay on for no reason other than the brand which is brand obsession. just like my sister whos happy to pay 20x for any crap that has dior stamped on ir

Would anyone else feel slightly cheated if they negotiated their own promotion? Meaning, you might get what you wanted on the surface, but really from there it's hard to trust your management that they'll reward you for actual merit?

I would feel slightly cheated. Waiting for a promotion now (I was told was close) and have had to bring it up in reviews and ask where it is. Awkward and disappointing. Is it magical thinking to get a promotion out of nowhere that I didn't have to campaign for? Or is everyone out there really negotiating promos (or near quitting to get them)?

    • Its dependent on culture. In some companies - i believed and was true, that if you had to ask, it was already too late. In some like MS, asking helps flesh out what your manager really wants to see you demonstrate, and then you can check those boxes.

  • Your manager can't even promise you will get promoted. Raises are merit based so you will look foolish.

Manage up. It is ok. The notion of asshole exists to reduce competition.
