They count as short term gains. If your normal rate is high or there are a lot of shares, you may have moved into the top bracket

Supplemental income is taxed at your marginal rate. Your normal checks have a blended rate applied to them. Since this is additional income it all gets hit at your highest bracket.
Is not the cash bonus (assuming RSU too) taxed at the 22.5% (used to be 24% before Trump tax cuts) rate regardless of the tax bracket?
