After college I was working for a decent company. Then switched to Amazon for high pay and reputation. One year later pipped. Took severance and left. Then joined a startup. It was very good. Tech lead was very supportive and wlb was quite good. Loved working here. I was getting calls for interview but I used to reject them because I wanted to stay here for sometime. After working for 6 months when our product came live, then after somedays I got a call from founder and was told that I was getting laid off saying that most of the work is now being outsourced and also that he has hired someone half of my salary and they are willing to join office physically and you don't have ownership because you are not joining office physically. I had said them that I'll join after a month till then I'll continue working from home.
My tech lead was happy with my work and had never any concern related to work. So finally I am now looking for new opportunities and have learnt that working for very early stage startup is very unpredictable and you can be fired anytime without a warning.

But getting fired isn't issue, I am happy that I'll get higher TC. So now I am doing Leetcode. I am getting calls for interview. But recently I contacted a hiring manager on LinkedIn for a role and then he said that 3 companies within 2 years isn't healthy. And now I am little concerned about it. Let me know what you think about it. Need suggestions.
Thanks

  • I mean, that hiring manager making judgements just like that, without even trying to understand your situation and what caused you to change 3 companies in 2 years is more unhealthy. I’d say you dodged a bullet with this one.

In general, I don’t think you did anything wrong with your career. You were doing your best and it’s pretty common to get laid off from a startup – especially when you’re junior, early in your career. Amazon is also known to PIP people left and right. Don’t let one pretentious HM derail you.

  • I had similar situation-. I switched 3 companies within 1.5 years because I was laid off from the company I made my first switch to. But if your interview performance is good and you have good reason to justify the switch it works out. But know this companies big or small will dump your ass on first sign of trouble so you should be prepared.

Sorry, but some recruiters and HMs will definitely skip over you or ding points for it. Not all, and if they’re willing to talk to you, your explanation of being PIP’ed definitely isn’t helping you.

That said, it’s not an uncommon situation. SWE are still in high demand and if you got in to amzn you’ll be fine.

I don’t know you so not judging but given the facts and given that a new HM has to hire good candidates it might be a bit of a red flag because people do hire someone who will stay because you really become productive after a few months. I would say if someone does ask why have a good answer prepared so you don’t stutter. It’s nothing to be too concerned about I would say just be prepared to answer is all. On another note, while pip is common in Amazon and startups do always run short on cash id also suggest you introspect a bit and see how you can make yourself more valuable to the next company so layoff is s bit harder.

Sure. I'll have a good answer prepared for explaining the job change. I am now looking for good company where I can stay for atleast 2+ years. Thanks for you comment.
