Is it possible to be overemployed and cleared?

Trying to figure out if it makes sense or is even possible to be overemployed and cleared (TS/SCI)?

I see it happening with friends at defense contractors but no idea how feasible it might be at tech companies. Specifically targeting the MOAG - Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, Google (think cleared cloud) or other tech companies.

Or is it more lucrative to just dump cleared work?

  • Iโ€™m cleared SWE with a TS/SCI - where are you at with that TC? ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I think itโ€™s possible to be overemployed with one defense and one commercial, but two defense wouldnโ€™t work as job 2 would look you up in JPAS/DISS and see youโ€™re already under J1.

Traditional defense contractors have their business models shaped by Secretary McNamara's vision from the 1960s and cumulative federal/defense acquisition policy since then. Industry TC is heavily influenced by a "cost plus" philosophy where the government puts a soft ceiling on the value they would entertain paying for any individual's work.

Only a tiny fraction of employees at those companies can make more than the government will reimburse (even if they're not personally on cost+ contracts, because so many of their peers ARE on those contracts, plus in theory they may be bid on cost+ basis in the future). Of the few employees who do make more, most are in "G&A" roles like sales or senior leadership (not SWEs).

You gotta come to the 'DIU' side of the house if you want to make tech industry TC while also working on defense products/services. Companies that aren't burdened by historic business models are able to achieve much higher efficiency, deliver more value, and pay higher TC than "legacy" defense contractors (including newer companies built with the old school business model) but they have to sell in modern/innovative contract vehicles. No way the govt would agree to pay SWEs 500k unburdened (but they'll happily buy cheaper and better SKUs that were built by 500k SWEs).

I have a friend with 2 150-180k TC positions - one is 80% remote and the other is 90% remote - both utilizing SCI - he has no degree and 2-3 YOE. He def checks for any non-compete clauses and who the prime contractors are before accepting

Iโ€™m lightly confused why anyone would chase cleared SWE work over regular commercial (where overemployment is common/easy). After 7 years in a SCIF, 99% of cleared work made me want to jump off a bridge head first.

Forgive me for being out of the loop here but how does that even work? I had no access to anything outside of the box. Have they declassed & broken a ton of stuff out or are they mixing semi-related cleared and uncleared work as joint responsibilities of the same position?

Lots of unclass dev environments hosted in GovCloud or systems spanning classification levels using Diode to DTO highside. Common workflow is to develop lowside with notional data and then just DTO and deploy all the code highside.
