Raleigh NC vs New Jersey

I am considering two jobs. One in Raleigh NC (98k). Another one is in New Jersey (110k). New Jersey is close to NYC, which is a vibrant city. But is the salary too low to live comfortably there? How would the quality of life compare in the two places given the salaries above? Where would you have moved? For reference, I am in my 20s. No kids.

Bruh Raleigh is in the middle of no where land. I’d take proximity to NYC any day. You’re close to Amtrak which unlocks a lot of travel

If you’re young and single, don’t come to RTP. Please stay away

FWIW I’m living comfortably at 70k TC in the RTP area

How is rent there? Could you give a breakdown of expenses?

Cisco vzIq77 Oct 28, 2018

Rent is $1000/mo for 1 bedroom unless you want to live further from work or downtown.

I've lived in both places. If you're single, try Jersey. If you have a family, RTP is a better bet.

Is $110k enough to live comfortably in NJ?

Which company in RTP?

First of all NJ is a liberal shit hole. Sky high taxes, absurd sky high tolls and cost of living, very low end housing, tons of crime and the people are shit. Second no 110k is horrible for NJ even single to live on. Also while NJ is close to NYC its very very expensive to get into the city and back not to mention everything in the city is expensive. Go for RTP you will have 110x higher quality of life and 98k goes alot farther than 110k in NJ.

Really depends on what OP is after. If they want to buy a house, settle down, and have their money go farther, RTP is fine. If they want to go out at 2 am and eat at virtually any type of restaurant imaginable and not have to worry about a car, well the NYC area is great for that. Or also maybe buying beer before 10am on Sunday. :D

No at 2am you can’t take Path to NYC. You can only Uber/lyft, and it will break your pocket. NJ is a shithole place unless you live in a nice neighborhood which is 1.5 hours away and only for family.

Raleigh is amazing for if you have a family. For single early 20s, ehhh there’s not too much to do compared to NYC. 98k in Raleigh is quite comfortable.

I went to college in NJ. Would not recommend it to a single intellectual. NYC or Philly had options for dating and social connections, but NJ was just sad. Dumb party bros who love football, mostly. Hoboken and Jersey City were awful. That being said, the NYC area culture is more shallow, arrogant, and aggressive than the West coast as a whole, so go there if that's your thing.

Why? Can you explain?
