Currently I have these options:

eBay (San Jose - return offer) - 125k salary + bonus, RSUs 35/4, 35k sign on

Capital One (Texas) - 98k salary + bonus, 10k sign on

Startup (SF) - 130k base + bonus, no sign on

I've already read the negotiation articles commonly linked here, I wanted to ask for specific advice on parts of TC I could ask to bump up.

Answering all “why not EBay” questions... Simply the worst interviewing experience I ever had.

Interviewed in NYC, onsite. First, they couldn’t find an interviewer for my first round. Finally they did. This person asked a simple coding question, and then spent 30 min ranting about how they are constantly working overtime, no one listens to their opinion and so on.

Then, the second interviewer asked a simple coding question and stared asking a lot of follow up questions about testing. I got curious why there was such strong focus on testing in interviews and that person responded “oh, in my team testers and software engineers are basically the same, so if we hire you you’ll be doing both”.

Third interviewer was in the middle of the meeting so he asked the second interviewer to keep me busy for extra 10 min. Funny, but this person was the only one who had interesting coding problems.

Finally, two interviews with management. Both were remote (managers were in San Jose I think). First one was nothing special, but second was a mess. It was with a Sr Director, he couldn’t find a meeting room, so he ended up squatting in another director’s room and got kicked out in the middle of the meeting. He was calling from some noisy hall during the second half, with people chatting next to him.

Walking out of the building, I was sure this was not the company I wanted to work for. So, when they called me a few days ago and said they’d like to schedule an extra round, I politely declined. Accepted Google’s offer a few weeks later.

So your interview experience means that the TS should not go to a company where he/she assumingely didn’t have a similar experience?

  • Take out Capital one from consideration

If you’re not on visa, consider joining the startup. You’re new in your career, this is the time to sail thru the storms. You’d learn A LOT.
