Re-request a change of employment site to G = self-sabotage?

Current TC: 275

I have an offer from G, which I consider a severe low-ball, for one office location that I had explicitly asked for. But now I am unsure how much room there is for negotiation and was wondering if I should ask for a different location, one where I currently reside. This lets me not worry about moving and not be much affected even if I fail to negotiate a higher comp. Would this dillydallying backfire on my face? And I end up with no offer for anywhere?
Feeling stupid and nervous.

I can't say for sure but I really doubt that it would "backfire". The question would be whether the other location has head count and if you can you find a team to match with.

Google is an extremely big company. Nobody is sitting around freaking out about you in particular being wishy washy about joining. We've got better things to do haha. Just my take..

TLDR: Is San Francisco worth working in? Given how ridiculously expensive it is to rent there?

If you were open to move to SF, but got low-balled in TC, absolutely a good reason to be upset and ask for a different location.

Just make sure you know whether a higher TC will make you accept SF, because they might ask and match.

Personally, I'm very unlikely to consider SF when the pay everywhere is about the same these days. 100% won't consider SF just for an extra 50k/year, and often you get even less for location.

  • I mean, what are the chances you're gonna get a team match at the new place? Assuming the current team isn't ok with letting you stay at the new place and the recruiter is cool with you team matching again

well the thing is I already had multiple teams that did want me in location A - I was not fully thrilled and thus thought of moving to location B. Then I got multiple teams at location B. But then when I saw the offer it was way too low for me to move to B. So, now maybe the teams at A still have an open position for me. If I were the recruiter, I wouldn't like a candidate to go back and forth. But then I think it's a huge life decision for me to move to a new city and effectively make less money.

Just explain this to the recruiter. The pay is too low to make the move worthwhile, but may be sufficient for another location. Seems like a reasonable thing to say; I can't see a good reason they should be upset.

For example, if I interview at Google and they offer me L5 in Seattle, I might as well quit Amazon and move. If they offer L4 in Seattle, I might as well just delay (use as insurance in case I get Pivoted). If they offer L4 remote, I might as well work with my current manager to ensure I can boomerang back to Amazon, and switch to Google.

If they offer L4 for SF, there's not much chance I'll be moving there.
