Reaching out in banking

Who should I reach out to for banking recruitment? I assume analysts/associate level are the most common, but would it be more helpful to reach out to MD/VP level as well?

Trust your instincts and don't ever reach out to an MD unless you have some kind of connection you can leverage. They aren't involved with recruiting and office culture as much as the analysts and associates who do most of the work when it comes to recruiting.

I generally recommend associates. Analysts are too jammed with work a lot of the time and have less power in recruiting than associates. Associates are junior enough that they can relate to college kids and aspiring bankers and have decent sway in hiring. More senior bankers will probably have less time and be less invested in helping people trying to break in given how long has elapsed since they landed a job in investment banking

Thanks for the response! In terms of the method of reaching out would you recommend doing so via LinkedIn - either message request or InMail - or try to source their email and then email directly? I have heard of arguments and advices in favor of both.

Agree. Associates would be the best people to reach out by cold emailing or calling. Most importantly, analysts have no power to bring someone in I guess lol
