I made a huge mistake. 5 years ago I had an offer from G (without ANY preparation), but I went with Amazon. I was new grad and stupid. I was in a great team at Amazon, great pay (high performer, so got really good bonuses every year), great teammates and manager, great WLB, great learning, etc. Then I decided to move to a different team, just because I wanted to try something new. The manager himself came to me and asked me to join his team. I did, and that was my second mistake. After a few months I realized how terrible the management, the product and the team atmosphere was. I thought I could work it out, and stayed another month, and then they put me on dev plan. They kept the plan open-ended, no matter how much I delivered they kept adding to the plan. I started looking external and I couldn't pass G/U. I did get offers from some other companies, but honestly I didn't want to work with them the moment I met the interviewers. They were way below my average expectations. I don't know what to do. Not allowed to switch teams while being on dev plan. Feel very sad that I had an offer from G years ago and now I failed their interview. The recruiter said the feedback was that I was extremely close to make it, because the solutions were correct and optimal but the consistent feedback from different rounds was that I was a bit slow. I don't even know if that's something they tell everyone who they reject or not. I just don't know what to do:(
Couldn't you switch back to your previous team?
Try other companies. Not just G. If you are ready, get referrals.
I already got offers from some other companies, but I didn't like them. After working at Amazon (product and scale) I really don't want to work at lower level companies. During the interviews, the interviewers were way below my expectations.
What's your field? Try airbnb, lyft and few other startups. Good opportunity to grow quickly. also FB, Netflix, Apple etc. They all have tons of projects and scope/scale.
Fucking Amazon
Sounds like youre a hostage, just keep grinding you'll get out soon enough
i’ve been there too. try again. don’t get stuck if you are unhappy w where you are. it was a good lesson. company fame, the temporary growth, “leadership” vision, free lunch, gym, these don’t count. what counts is how the company values its people, how the culture respects the talents and encourage career growth. It can’t shout out a slogan “hire and develop the best”, but in practice it puts people on hidden agenda everyday.
>don't get stuck if you're unhappy. How?? I'm extremely unhappy at my team, but can't switch because of the dev plan. Tried to interview externally, but one of these happened: 1. The company I like doesn't have openings in Seattle (FB, LinkedIn, Netflix) 2. I failed the interview: G, U 3. Although I got offers from some companies, but I don't like them (in comparison with the top ones) in terms of product, scale, level of the engineers, etc. (OCI, Lyft, etc.). So I am stuck and can't unstick myself:(
do u have to stay in seattle? maybe you can expand ur search.
Are you on Visa?
No. I am a citizen.
Ok then there is nothing to worry about. I worked at Amazon and I am much happier here at Snap. Just take your time, prepare and apply. There are tons of good companies out there, with better pay and wlb. Worst case you get fired at Amazon, you already have experienced Amazon, time for a change. If I were you, I would quit right away.
It seems like you’ve made up your mind to only work at 4-5 different companies. So then deal with the situation and tough it out. Otherwise try another company and realize it might only last a year if you get in and switch to google, you might learn something different, and maybe you’ll actually like it and your impact.
I actually didn't have my mind made to work only at the top 4-5 BEFORE the interviews (and that's why I went to interview with them). But after I met the interviewers and their levels, I concluded that they're not comparable at all to those top 4-5.
It’s a 1 day interview, do you really think it’s representative? And is it really worse than spending next year on a dev plan before reinterviewing?
Your manager has less leverage over you than you think. Push hard for them to close your dev plan, work hard, and force them to make a decision. If they need you, they won’t let you go. But, worst case, you’re out and open to apply to other companies.
Are you out of your banana eating mind? Big mistake? $AMZN went up 486% in the last 5 years. $GOOG merely doubled.
First of all, it's not just about money. Second, Amazon stock went up, yes, but Google has annual refreshers and a much better atmosphere. They don't people on dev plans because of their managers.
I wouldn’t paint Google as all roses. Yes, there are good teams and probably on average there are more good teams at Goog than at amzn, but there are many bad teams and the likelihood of getting there is higher for the outsiders. There are teams at Google that are quite unpopular internally due to different reasons like culture, nature of work, turnover etc. Those are the teams that are staffed primarily by external candidates. With that, enjoy what you have. Every path is the right path. It could be you dodged a bullet by avoiding Google the first time and worked for a good team at Amazon, at least for some time. And like Comcast guy said there were advantages of staying at Amazon, you just don’t want to see them.

Seems you were close just try again later
Later mean a year from now. What should I do during this year? I can't tolerate the b*s* of my team at Amazon, and I already hit the cliff this year, and they didn't add a penny to it.
What is the compensation split in the 5th year: base + same RSUs as the 4th year?
