Reasons for not moving out of bay area

Aug 9, 2019 51 Comments

We have 2 young kids and both of us work in companies in Bay area where we have offices in Austin. We keep oscillating between moving to Austin or staying here. Main reasons to move to Austin are
- better quality life due to less expensive life style
- since the companies are growing fast there, chances of going up in a company are high
Some reasons not to move are
- relatively less oppurtunities to jump ships
- might miss out on being part of cool teams(my intuition, not sure)

Would like to hear from people who stayed in Bay area on why they decided so.
Also would like to know if there will be any difference for education and raising of kids in Bay area vs Austin

IOT - Not even the people who live in the Bay Area like Bay Area people. I’ve never seen such a weird mix of arrogance and self-hate victimhood

Another compliment. Gosh so lucky to have the attention of someone that not only can't add anything to the convo, he just keeps digging himself in and showing how little has has to offer with his titles... yup😢

I moved to the bay area from Austin . Austin was honestly not that great . Food was meh, except Tex mex . Not a lot to do outdoors . Terrible weather . Cockroaches . Traffic as bad as the Bay Area .

      Also
      - Boring
      - Too hot
      - Too cold
      - Allergies
      - Texas
      - Boring
      - Not many outdoor options
      - Every land is private. Not like In California.

Underrated point on private land, the hiking around Texas is terrible. Truly a boring landscape. Everyone gets sucked in by how modern and hip downtown Austin is but in truth the majority of the city is boring suburbia.

  • Uhhhh... major con in Austin is that it’s 💯 and humid there pretty much unbearable in spring summer fall.. that and less diverse, less access to incredible getaways (Napa, Tahoe, Monterey etc)

Yeah. It’s surrounded by 400 miles of Texas in every direction, which may be a pro or a con depending on what you like to do on the weekend. For me it’s a dealbreaker. World class bbq tho.

I just moved to Bay Area from the East Coast and the East coast is way better than this. More diverse in terms of what people do for a living, better sport teams, four seasons, moderate COL.

If you are planning to stay at Google, then sure. You probably won't find another company that will beat your TC in Austin.

My wife and I bought our houses more than 10 yrs ago so we are fortunate yet don’t have the ridiculously high TCs some ppl are bringing in. We have 2 kids and one goes to public school while the other is in an exp pre school.

The biggest reason for not moving is we are used to the lifestyle here and the highly diverse pot here (though in some pockets too many Asians- feels like segregation 😂).

No way we will move to TX because I have been there, have relatives there and I just don’t feel comfortable. Most ppl are nice and don’t care about your skin color but theres enough racial tension there for me to stay away.

The only other places I can consider are LA, Seattle, and NYC but neither of those will be markedly cheaper
    Aug 9, 2019 2
    • Racial tension? Seriously? You don’t real know about other locations. You just not used to and looks like you never travel

Actually I have. To at least more than 15 states in the US, Latin America and Europe. I have met many c—k, g—k and wtf are here type of comments in Dallas. I have spent months there as a kid. Sorry there’s no point in trying to discuss this any further but go ahead and make assumptions.
