We have 2 young kids and both of us work in companies in Bay area where we have offices in Austin. We keep oscillating between moving to Austin or staying here. Main reasons to move to Austin are - better quality life due to less expensive life style - since the companies are growing fast there, chances of going up in a company are high Some reasons not to move are - relatively less oppurtunities to jump ships - might miss out on being part of cool teams(my intuition, not sure) Would like to hear from people who stayed in Bay area on why they decided so. Also would like to know if there will be any difference for education and raising of kids in Bay area vs Austin
Austin have enough opportunities to jump. Go live the life, don’t waste your young age in Bay Area when you have option to move. Bay Area don’t have enough teachers. Apart from weather you don’t really miss anything.
Everyone in Austin and surrounding areas
Uhhhh... major con in Austin is that it’s 💯 and humid there pretty much unbearable in spring summer fall.. that and less diverse, less access to incredible getaways (Napa, Tahoe, Monterey etc)
If you are planning to stay at Google, then sure. You probably won't find another company that will beat your TC in Austin.
Quality of life when you have to spend May to September only indoors? Lol.
And December to February too. It’s too cold
Op, does G give you same salary after moving to Texas?
☝️ the real question
I moved to the bay area from Austin . Austin was honestly not that great . Food was meh, except Tex mex . Not a lot to do outdoors . Terrible weather . Cockroaches . Traffic as bad as the Bay Area .
Also - Boring - Too hot - Too cold - Allergies - Texas - Boring - Not many outdoor options - Every land is private. Not like In California.
Underrated point on private land, the hiking around Texas is terrible. Truly a boring landscape. Everyone gets sucked in by how modern and hip downtown Austin is but in truth the majority of the city is boring suburbia.
I've lived in Austin for many years, PM me if you're interested. As people have mentioned, weather is a big concern. However, there are many benefits including significantly lower COL and being a big fish in a smaller pond.
Can you eloborate on the benefits
What about Seattle?
Only if you love stuck up ugly women, arrogant wanna be startup bros, expensive real estate, traffic, and being around all the SJWs. Might as well stay in the bay at that point.
I've lived in Seattle for the last 7 years and the guy above me is actually 100% correct. Seattle kinda blows now. And the weather is trash.
🙄
🤮
Watch out @atinlay2, there might be scary Indians on H1B visas here 🤣🤣🤣
