What compensation could I expect as a mechanical/aerospace engineer as a recent grad, preferably in the space industry? I’m currently working in the consulting industry and I also have over 8 years in the military with a TS clearance. Hoping the TC isn’t an extreme cut from where I’m at now. #aerospaceenginnering #mechanicalengineering #spaceindustry

  • It's highly dependent on the area where your applying, but for a level 1 mechanical you're maybe looking at around 80K at your standard legacy aero (Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop) with some of the strongest 401Ks out of any industry. For newer aerospace (SpaceX and Blue Origin) you'll probably get similar base but your "extras" will be different. SpaceX doesn't offer 401K matching but offers RSUs that are fairly liquid for a private company. Blue Origin offers a fair 401K match (5%) and stock options that have no liquidity until Jeff says so

    • 2 years is pretty standard across the industry to hit L2. After L2 companies like LM like to drag their feet so that is probably the best time to jump ship.

That’s good to know. I already kind of figured I would have to move companies to progress faster.

I’ll be close to 40 by the time I graduate and will be taking a likely 30-40k pay cut to work as an engineer, so trying to move up fast to play catch up is high on my priority list.

  • Maybe avoid engineering and use your 8yrs exp in the military and consulting to do program management. Legacy Aero company’s love veterans in management positions as you will be interfacing with military personnel. Also tc will start at 140
