Passed HC for L6, recruiter asked for expectations. I shared my current TC at a public company ($550k) and also the fact that have another management competing offer from a unicorn company. She said no way to get to $550k and they won’t match unless i have a competing offer. She was talking about like $450k TC which she knows I would decline. She also said that they will value unicorn offer stock value at 0.75 of its value. I am asking for $600k but would probably accept for $550K but not $450K. Any recent L6 offer here? Isn’t $450k low for L6?
Did you tell her how many leetcode hard you’ve done?
I did zero.
Why would you want to go to Google if they don't match or increase your TC ? Better work / WLB / benefits ?
Just exploring to see what is out there, won’t leave if it doesn’t make sense :)
WIth a TC of $450k, the hiring manager would be in his/her right mind to send you packing if you so much as hesitate. Haggling over $50k at that level sends a message that you can’t look beyond things that affect you directly.
Financial services guy here. what does L6 level translates to? Is it like product manager but for dev/engg?
Staff Software Engineer, one above Senior
$450k for L6 does sound low but I hired in at L5 and my TC went up faster than I thought, so maybe it's standard to bring someone in at the low end of their level, to give them somewhere to go if their performance is good. I don't know. That will be a tough call though if the offer stays firm at $450k.
For a $100k paycut there is no way you should accept that unless your job is absolute hell or you are about to get fired. Sadly I doubt they’re going to match or exceed $550k. Even if you got to $500k that’s a pretty steep pay cut from what you already have
I am actually doing well at work, so yes, won’t take it.
Geo? I accepted a slightly lower offer and recently started at L6. I'm is Seattle though. I ended up slightly higher than my previous gig (Microsoft) but starting TC wasn't the highest priority for me. I have also heard that comp goes up if you perform and my personal/family situation is such that I want to put in a shift, but don't necessarily want to kill myself over work.
This is the game at Google. They wont consider your current comp, only competing offers. Don't bother interviewing at Google unless you plan to interview multiple places and get competing offers. If you have been reading Blind over the last 6 months you would know that. I used q huge decacorn offer to ratchet up Google - they matched it at about 80% equity value.

6 yoe L6!! Did you write the Dropbox file system?
Op is at Box not dropbox. Microsoft guy sigh
I went from L3 to L6 at G in 6.5 years. Funny thing is that 4-5 took the longest and 5-6 only took 1.5 years. No superpower required. All about being at the right place at the right time. So I think L6 with 6YEO is not unreasonable.
