I️m in the middle of negotiations with Company A and B. When I️ told B I️ have an offer from A with this much comp, they asked to see an offer letter, but I️ have a verbal offer from A. Anyone else been in this situation? What do you do?

Don’t send them anything . Send them this “Dear Recruiter, I wouldn’t be able to share you a copy of offer letter from company A because it’s unethical, a breach of trust and it’s not relevant to our conversation. I would like the decision factor of pay should be based on my strengths and abilities, the impact I can make in the role and what I bring to the table. Now that you are aware of my expectations on the pay and market compensation, please do let me know what are your feasible numbers and I can let you know whether I’d be able to afford it. Once again thank you for your continued support and looking forward to working with you.”

  • You don’t have to provide them a written offer letter

  • Some recruiters are funny.

This happened to me once, not at FB. The recruiter strongly insinuated that I was lying about my offers and current compensation, and asked for documentation to include offer letters, my current W2, my equity grant letters, and the like. I respectfully but firmly declined to provide the requested materials, at which point the recruiter became openly hostile and derogatory. I then CC'd the hiring manager, politely informing both of my offer decline. This got me a new recruiter and an increase of around 15% TC, which I also declined.

I checked up a month later and the original recruiter was no longer employed at that company.

The point is that you are perfectly within your rights to refuse this request in a civil manner. Your recruiter, if smart, will know to back off. Your recruiter, if dumb, will escalate and give you an excuse to involve the HM. As a rule, HMs don't like losing good candidates because of dumb recruiters, so your offer will probably be safe.

Tell them the offer is confidential and that you don't feel comfortable breaking up those terms
