Recruiter: what’s your expected compensation? Me: it’s negotiable. What’s your budget for this role? Recruiter: 140k Me: that’s lower than I am expecting. I have an offer on the table for 160k. Recruiter: it’s not normal to begin interview processes when you already have an offer on the table. Me: why not Recruiter: it just isn’t. No one does that. Me: well what’s wrong with continuing to interview to see if I can leverage my offer for a better one? I mean it’s not like you offered me anything yet. This is our first conversation. And you were the one to reach out to me. Recruiter: it’s unfair to the company for us to waste time on a recruit Me: it’s not like I’m the only person you’re trying to recruit. You’re probably talking to dozens of candidates and I’m talking to dozens of employers. Edit: Many of you asked tc or gtfo so… < 160k tc. 3 yoe. Because someone commented if I took the interview then the recruiter called my bluff… The conversation ended with recruiter asking if I still want to do an interview and I declined. Also, no I didn’t lie about the offer and I’m going to accept it. Edit again: Bloomberg recruiter riding the viral coattail of my post: Check out this post! Which firm is more prestigious: Boston Consulting Group or Palantir?
This has to be a junior recruiter. Every mid to senior recruiter knows that everyone is interviewing.
Should've just said expecting 160k, instead telling them that you an offer already .
Or said you expect 160 to the moon. Why limit yourself for the amount you already got?
Having an offer in-hand for 160k DOES NOT MEAN you’re expecting 160k. If that were me, I treat it almost like a job I’m being asked to quit: tell me you can beat it by at least 10%.
Sounds like a shit recruiter. You did nothing wrong. Edit: Actually, yeah the guy above is probably right. Instead of saying you had an offer, just frame it as that's what your expectation is. Then when they give you an offer, you can use the other offer to negotiate. Perhaps that's a better approach than saying you already have an offer that early.
Well having multiple interview process going on in parallel is ok. Starting a new interview (first chat) when you have a pending offer is dicey - EXCEPT if you’re a new college hire and the offer doesn’t start till a few months out. Otherwise it is a waste of time as most companies won’t wait that long
I'm not entirely in agreement because having a pending offer doesn't mean that the offer actually interests you. It's possible that you are not interested in the offer at all. That's why, keeping it in your back pocket for negotiation isn't a bad idea as opposed to telling your recruiter about it right off the bat.
They're just salty they can't pay as much 💰
The recruiter is probably salty that no one accepts his offers
You will get a lot of answers that substantiate your opinion on blind. Because, blind has a great love towards recruiters. It is very biased. But, here is an unbiased objective response. No, not a shit recruiter as others are saying. You didn't use tact at all in that conversation. No one in their right mind starts off a interview process, when you already have an offer at hand. No point in having you go through the process, only to find out you either accept the earlier offer or somethign else that you may already have in the process or finalizing.
To be clear, recruiters are the help and it doesn’t really matter how you talk to them. If you don’t perform well at any stage in the process, they’ll lose your number so it’s up to you to talk to them however you see fit. What’re they gonna do? Learn Go and fill the role themselves?
> No one in their right mind starts off a interview process, when you already have an offer at hand Nonsense. Did that multiple times. Exploding offers are just a meaningless pressure 9/10 times, never had an offer rescinded even after 6-8 weeks.
Recruiters are dumb af. Greasy car salesmen/bimbos of tech just trying to fill their quota, playing match with key words on the JD and your resume
Not all, but this. I got the best experience with my Meta recruiter few years ago.
Had a really good experience with the Meta recruiting process recently. Everyone was very responsive and the recruiter tried her best and did get me a better offer after saying they were maxed out. It seemed like it took 3 discussions with the comp people.
The recruiter is a moron. Don’t waste time on recruiters, some of these people are operating unchecked. There’s a number of reasons why you may choose to interview after receiving an offer. I have like 6 outstanding offers currently… and each of them will wait until I decide
You didn’t handle that well at all. Good for them to call you out in it.
How should I have handled it? Isn’t it ridiculous that the recruiter is worried about me wasting their time when they waste the times of other people?
OP could have done better but it was recruiter who started saying shit first
