1. When you get messages on Linkedin from recruiters is there a significant difference between working with a recruiter that works for a firm/agency vs one that works for the same company they're recruiting for? 2. Say you're interested in working for Hulu and you get approached by a recruiter from a firm that recruits for Hulu + a bunch of other companies. Is there any reason to be concerned about working with that recruiter? 2a. If you also get contacted by a recruiter that is directly employed for Hulu would you prefer to work with them instead? My gut feeling says that these agency recruiters probably have less pull/flexibility within the companies they're recruiting for which can hinder negotiation and their commission could have some negative effect on your offer. If you have any insight into this I'd appreciate your input c: TC 190k YOE 2.5
I’d be sure the company actually works with third-party recruiters. Many don’t. The third-party recruiters will use the job as bait, then try to get you to apply for another less desirable role they are actually able to source.
I have been lucky enough to not see this first hand. That sounds lame, did you have this happen?
Agency recruiters job is to get more clients and get more candidates. It’s a chicken and egg problem.
1. Yes - the difference is in house recruiters are paid a salary just like engineers and get peer reviews from hiring managers vs an agency recruiter is paid low salary and then gets a bonus per placement (typically 20-30% of your base). An agency recruiter wants more candidates will only present you to hiring teams that pay them. An in house recruiter has more candidates than they could ever need, so they may not care if you accept, they only care what their hiring teams think - if they act on your behalf, it’s because they want to / like you. 2. The company will take mental note you cost 20-30% extra. If I’m negotiating, I’d prefer that not to be written on my forehead. 3. I’d always rather work with an in-house recruiter UNLESS there are no positions, it’s hard for me to find a job, etc. Agency recruiters are all about getting the company to interview you & getting you to accept as fast as possible so they can get paid.
Any company I’m interested in working for will have in house recruiters. When Joe Schmoe from Unknown Incorporated contacts me I always ignore.

UCC: why no Congress support?
If you interview and receive an offer who do you negotiate with? Is it the original recruiter or another person from within the company?
