Recruiters on LinkedIn: Should I fill out my profile or just link a PDF of my resume

Feb 8, 2020 8 Comments

Suppose I’ve applied for a position on a company’s job portal. When messaging a recruiter on LinkedIn to improve conversion rate for a first round interview, is it important to copy all info on my resume over to my LinkedIn profile (job descriptions, personal projects, open source contributions, skills) in addition to sending a PDF? Or is just mentioning I applied online and linking a PDF of my resume enough?

Well, matching your resume info in your profile is a best practice, we check for red flags (different dates, job titles, etc). It's nice to see you are publicly stating what you have in your resume (unless you are under NDA). Btw I'd recommend finding the hiring manager or possible supervisor of the role and engaging in a meaningful conversation BEFORE applying. By meaningful... what I mean is don't open your chat and send the resume. Instead see what that person liked or blogged about (find something you like/might have a common interest in) and start there. Then interject the "I noticed there's an opening in your department and I'd love to have a quick conversation about what you're looking for" message (or something similar). The recruiter would be the last person I'd reach out.

Thanks, at the bare minimum I would put job titles and dates. The thing with a lot of the larger companies I plan to apply to is that their junior positions seem to be general, and not for a specific team. I’ve seen some exceptions and I’ll keep your advice in mind
