What happens if I accept a Microsoft/Amazon offer and reject it later? I understand it's bad and I don't want to do it either, but I interned and for returning as FTE recruiter says that I'll be placed depending on open headcounts, and I'll know exact team placement couple months before joining means I would have to accept the offer before that. I don't want to sign up for something I am not passionate about. Need info on blacklist policy especially for Amazon and Microsoft.
Especially in Seattle. You can’t keep jumping between Microsoft and Amazon if you piss one of them off
Makes sense! Thanks 😊
No one is going to be pissed off.
No one is going to fault you for rejecting an offer. That’s history. Most companies understand that candidates will take the most sensible offer available and will change their minds as new opportunities come up
He's not rejecting an offer, hes accepting it and then going to flake out before joining based on some notion of not being passionate about a team he knows nearly nothing about..
Same difference. People change their minds and it affects you. Don’t you think it’s less costly to the company that they change their mind now? Rather than 3 years down the road when they’ve acquired tons of knowledge and can hurt you as a manager even more
Since you’re so early in your career you want to experience different companies and people understand that it’s normal
I think blacklisting is a thing of the past... esp for these behemoth companies. Chances are they aren't organized enough to even be able to properly record your screwing them over. That being said, having been on the receiving end of new hires backing out of accepted offers...it's a dick move
Well said , it’s actually true
Also, if it were in the company's best interest to rescind your offer, they could do so without a reason... You are free to do the same thing. Some smaller companies may blacklist you for it... But I wouldn't want to work there if that's the way they feel. Kinda hypocritical.
As a recent Microsoft manager, I can tell you that not joining after accepting an offer, especially a while after accepting is a giant dick move and a personal pet peeve of mine, enough so that I would work to make sure youre not be hired at MS again. Other managers probably dont care as much. I would suggest a couple things 1) try to get the tech areas they are considering and discuss your preferences. Usually they ask you this stuff and generally speaking, teams you interned with would get first dibs at least at ms. Did you not like the team you interned with? If you and the team can commit to broad areas that will help you be on the same page. 2) being passionate about a job you know very little about can be overrated. Growth often comes from tackling unexpected things that you didnt know youd be into or good at. In either Amazon or MS there are opportunities to move around and work on different stuff if you really dont enjoy your current thing.
Letting people go isn’t a dick move after they join the company, why are you holding a grudge on people? It seems to me your ego is a little bruised and you can’t take it. Also in this case, the intern doesn’t have a team to join yet, and likely there’s no hiring manager associated with their job. Not likely anyone is going to be penalized if the intern is rejecting the offer
That's a dick move too and I dont do that without causes beyond my control either. Has nothing to do with my ego, it has to do with the fact that it causes me and my team a bunch of needless work. Generally, you commit x resources to interview for college hires. You do the interviews for everyone, not just your group. Then you get your college positions assigned. If you have only 1 position and your person decides that their not "passionate" about what you do (without having a real clue what that is) you're sol. And again, the intern would be ACCEPTING the offer and then refusing to join, sometime after they've accepted. I know it's a tough concept.
Thanks DOyu71. I don't want to go back to the team I interned with at all. But, I will work with the employer to make sure my preferences are noted.
Hope it works our for you.
Don’t burn bridges.
