I got call from Google Recruiter to interview at Google.
I am not at all prepared but he seems to be more inclined on me giving it a shot post 2-3 months of preparation
My Ex Manager from my previous company now works at Google and is happy to refer me and has asked me if I would like to apply as there are new openings in his team
Both this events have happened in same week.
Honestly speaking I want to take referral from my ex manager instead of going through hr path as I want to maintain good relationship with him as he is like mentor to me in life in general.
How do I handle this situation. How to deny hr without burning the bridges and go through the manager referral path. Also does it affect the interview if I go through referral or through hr.
Please help
PS: anyways I am not prepared mentally so not going for interview immediately but few months down the line surely

Tell your manager thanks for the referral offer and that you’re already in touch with a recruiter. You can get matched to his team during team matching phase which is after you clear all interviews rounds and hiring committee.
Microsoft is absolutely right.
This comes with a risk of them trying something that might ruin both the options, but if you trust them to be a good mentor, go ahead. Although personally, if I was in your place I'd take the guaranteed route, as my career comes first and a good mentor would understand that.
Best to apply at 4yoe in that way there are less chance of downlevel.
Referral is just a way of apply, it’s doesn’t add any value in HC decision.
