Google CFO confirms 'large-scale' layoffs
Hi everyone, Me and my wife are thinking of moving to Chicago and we're wondering if there are any good startups you know of that are looking for 0-2 years exp backend engineers. Any help would be appreciated.
Why? There's at least a few places much better than Chicago. Chicago is like a piece of Manhattan amidst corn fields with a cold lake. Not sure you would enjoy more than Austin, Boston, Boulder, Durham, SF, Seattle, NYC.
Thanks for chiming in. Someone paid me quite a bit of money (much fatter pay check) than my Bay Area salary and were wondering if my spouse can get a job at a tech startup. Otherwise we won't be able to move at all. Also, Chicago is much cheaper to start a family compared to the Bay Area/NYC, a couple of places I have lived in the past.
Chicago murder rate is off the charts
Don’t be dumb. If you’re an idiot and prefer to haunt the known neighborhoods where these shootings are generally clustered, then this is a concern. Otherwise, it’s like any other big city with pockets of messiness. Unlike other big cities, Chicago’s public transport, cleanliness, diversity, neighborhoods, culture, art and architecture are well above average.
"To be sure, Chicago has a high number of murders: the city often records the highest absolute total killings each year. But as The Trace has noted, the data tells us that Chicago’s murder rate is nowhere near the nation’s worst. On a per-capita basis — murders per 100,000 residents — the city regularly experiences fewer killings than places whose murder rates get far less national attention, like Kansas City, Missouri, or Cleveland." https://www.thetrace.org/2018/04/highest-murder-rates-us-cities-list/
Chicago is awesome, if you avoid south Chicago, there aren't any problems with Chicago. Yes winteris biting cold but people and city is ready for it. Midwest is the warmest place if you consider it's human factor. You would be great off.
And Garfield Park
Chicago is becoming a third world city. We are moving away. People are selfish and rude, especially the drivers.
#fakenews its like any large city, dont be stupid and you're fine.
you drive?
look at builtinchicago.com for startups. winter sucks here
+1 builtinchicago. Re weather, just buy canada goose jacket and be done with it
As another said, builtinchicago is a great resource. My company is hiring. Outcome Health seems promising and they just raised a crazy amount of money. Sprout Social is another one that seems decent, their office is nice at the very least.
As someone on the tech team there, recommend staying far far away from Outcome Health.
Good to know. Almost interviewed there but decided I'm happy enough where I'm at.
There are plenty of tech jobs in Chicago as long as you're competent and have reasonable expectations.
What's up with all the Chicago haters? It's one of the biggest tech cities in the US with the best quality of life in terms of income to purchasing power. Several top tech schools are close to the city, biggest VC fund, etc. The startups tend to be smaller but also tend to be profitable faster and last longer (on average), although our unicorns burn out quickly. Winter can suck but summer is awesome.
Summer blows. It's humid and Chicago looks like a third world city outside if downtown
It's humid sometimes. Visiting Dallas right now, Chicago doesn't feel humid at all... Third world city downtown? Have you visited San Francisco (homeless galore) or San Jose (crack den Haven) lately? When was the last time you were in Chicago?
From where?
From the Bay Area.
