Remote Work at Microsoft

Apr 28, 2021 29 Comments

Currently interviewing for a role at Microsoft. I thought I had read that they were allowing people to work remote forever, but the recruiter has said they want someone on site in Redmond. I have no desire to move there and have been transparent about that. Can someone who works there clarify their remote work policy post pandemic?

Team can have ‘preference’ for someone onsite but the overall company policy come July will be to give everyone the option for remote, hybrid, or in person. I was in a similar situation. Just go through and accept the role then in July when they bring up the conversation about coming back to office, tell them no you want to stay remote. As long as you can do your job effectively while remote, there is no issue.

It’s not that complicated though. Check to see if your stare has reciprocity setup, otherwise you are just responsible for fed taxes and state taxes only where applicable. I’m paying Ga state taxes even though I work out of Washington.

  • Going to be joining next week. Fully remote until September, and my team agreed to let me be home > 50% of the time, so going in 1-2 days a week.

Yeah it depends on the role. I went through a hiring event and 1 of the 3 roles I matched to needed me to be on-site in Bellevue. I live in Atlanta, so I was able to join one of the teams that work out of Redmond, but I work out of the new Atlanta office.

  • They announce only 50% remote after Covid, not full remote.

"Once we reach a point where COVID-19 no longer presents a significant burden on our communities, and as our sites move to the open stage of the dial, we view working from home part of the time (less than 50%) as standard for most roles – assuming manager and team alignment. "
