Long story short - got promoted at CK. Signed offer from AWS 2 months back. TC - 235K (182K base, rest paper money RSU) Amazon TC - 197K (158K base rest sign-on/stocks) Should I renege AWS? Isn't pay cut significant? Considering other benefits at CK like $5K PDP, 6% 401k etc. it's even bigger than expected pay cut now! Worried about future blacklist though. YOE: 1 Both in SF
Go to Amazon!!! Make a shift to CK again in a year with 400k compensation
Lol
Are the jobs in the same city ?
Yes. SF
Not worth moving then. Stay at CK and aim for more paying companies later. Just my opinion
What level at amazon? It sounds too low for sde2 so if it’s sde1 I do t think there’s place to even get there Needs more context
SDE 1 SF location
Yeah , you ain’t getting to those ck numbers ... Stay a bit more at ck then try again at sde2
Don't reneg. Renegotiate. Call your Amazon recruiter and let them know that you've been promoted at CK, and your comp package at Amazon is no longer competitive, but you'd still like to make a career move and are considering your options. Then cut the call short, but ask when a good time to call back would be. You want your recruiter to know that you are winnable. If they ask you to name a number, exaggerate your new CK package slightly so that if they "match" it will still be attractive.
If they can't renegotiate, will they rescind? Should I prepare for the offer to be rescinded by them?
You should already want to reneg on it so why would it matter. Now it is them dumping you instead of the other way around (but they won't anyway, Amazon is desperate for people right now and they can pay out of band for new hires)
what is pdp? and his reliable is the paper money
1. Personal development budget. Basically you get $5K/year to attend any trainings, conferences, buy books etc. You can choose anything you like & attend those and entire trips including flight, stay, Uber can be reimbursed with your budget. 2. Paper money will have value someday if not now. It has to IPO someday. They even started annual refreshers so they should IPO. Realistically even if I count paper money as zero, I am still not getting any significant pay bump.
Yeah, the difference is too small (imo) to make the jump even in the case of not making anything on the paper money plus taxation on rsus is a thing ...
Why would you take a pay cut voluntarily? "Worried about future blacklist though." blacklists are rarely permanent - they tend to last 3-5 years. but oh well, it's just one company.
Do it, I should have
Lol. You unhappy?
Haha yeah, they did a switcheroo with the team within a month of joining and dumped a ton of “urgent” work with little handover
What's your salary trajectory at CK? Do you know whether the ceiling at Amazon is higher?
Trajectory is greater at Amazon for external hire or TT ratings. For internal promotions, Amazon is kind of stagnant & it will take me at least 2-2.5 years to reach 235K
What is your level at CK? Sde 1/2/3/4 or senior 1/2 etc?

Do you really think Amazon is that bad
We are going through an impressive tech boom era right now. People should never take a pay cut nowadays. A job is a job, regardless FAANG prestige.
Considering my YOE am I making mistake optimizing for TC? I felt learning is important at my stage but 40K seems like big cost
You are right on both ends. Experience early on is primordial but 40k is huge. Tell them that you really want to work for them and that CK is making it hard for you to move. Ask if they can do anything to bridge the significant gap. Make sure that while you do this, it is clear that you will start once they comply. Recruiters and HMs can really make a difference if they feel that you are with them.
