Renegotiate after signing the offer

I already signed an offer from Airbnb and will kick off the relocation process soon but after handing in resignition at my current company, they offered to match Airbnb’s offer. I didn’t negatiate with Airbnb much because I had no competeting offer. Can I go back and ask for a little bit more money?

Don't stay with current employer... And don't negotiate with Airbnb, you shot yourself in the foot... Lessons learned

You were leaving your current job for a reason...

That reason could be money 😂

This is a learning experience for you. Go to Airbnb. Next time you have an offer AND you like your current position, show your supervisor and see if he/she can do anything. The reason why they offered to match is: 1) they didn’t know you were looking, 2) they don’t want to pay you any more than exactly what you were offered, and 3) YOU didn’t communicate with them, first. If you feel you’re worth more, YOUR JOB is to ask for a raise. This addresses all of the numbers above.

The thing is I like my current team but don’t like the work and have pessimistic outlook on the company. I do want to leave but don’t want to use my manager as a bargaining chip. The compensation at my current company is always low, didn’t expect they would match.

Hmm yes generally the advice is to leave the company who offer to match. You will want to leave again for the same reasons that drove you to interview and now you are labeled as the guy who has one foot out the door, ie don’t give opportunities etc. Schedule a call with recruiter or hiring manager at Airbnb (ask for a quick 5 min convo), let them know that your current company offered to match when you handed in resignation. This shows that you are a good hire to them - that your company is fighting to keep you and you want to see if there’s any possibility for higher financial compensation. You say you are still excited about working at Airbnb and working for X (hiring manager) and say you acknowledge that you have no leverage since you are going to accept the Airbnb offer regardless, but felt like you’d regret it if you didn’t even make the ask, given you didn’t negotiate at all earlier. You can keep it lighthearted and say causally you are usually bad at stuff like this. Airbnb’s incentive to give you a little bit more is to have you come in and feel well compensated, hence focus on the job vs wondering if you are underpaid. Airbnb highly likely has more room to play bc they give you an offer EXPECTING you to negotiate, which you didn’t. And dude Always negotiate. Everyone else does. If you were my friend, I’d yell at you to do better in life in general. Sounds like your old work probably underpaid you KNOWINGLY. This should be a reality check for you. Think of all the money you’ve left on the table. This is assuming you are a highly talented engineer. If you were a low level, easily replaceable non-tech employee making little (entry level marketing or customer service etc), probably doesn’t make sense to do much pushing back to get a couple thousand more.

Go to Airbnb and be careful next time . Other alternative depending on how things are at your end, if possible delay joining Airbnb by a month and interview at other places and ask for more. Staying at current company is not advisable, your manager won't trust you now and you have to work with him/her daily, not a good scenario !!
