Renegotiating an offer
I signed an offer with microsoft as I had already extended the deadline once and My tableau interview results were taking longer to materialize. Now Tableau came back with competing offer. I want to join Microsoft, but would love for microsoft to match the offer tableau gave. How can I go about it now?
A deal is a deal. You will look bad if you try to reopen negotiation. Only question is if you care. If they really want you they might humor you but most likely they'll tell you you take it or leave it. Seems unlikely they would retract the offer but you never know.
Signing is the end of the official negotiation. There is no use in pushing hard since you agreed you are willing to work at that rate. What you can do without being pushy is send them your tableau offer and let them know "the market rate is higher... Is there anything that can be done to bridge the gap?"
This seems to be best you can try. Say you still want to work with microsoft yada yada and ask if they can bridge the gap. Usually they do
Tableau usually gives much more stock? If they keep going up, you can potentially make more there. Their pay/refresh is more competitive than microsoft imo.
I've worked at both: for what it's worth, I'm much more happy at Tableau than I ever was at msft.
I’m happier at Tableau but my first 3 years I earned slightly less than MSFT and now I’m approaching the four year cliff. Which mean basically in terms of comp over four years will be a wash.
This is blind, anonymous posting. I think the deal is about pay in this post. OP states he would like to work with MS. So nothing personal against the company, it is just that others are willing to pay more for the same employees.
Dude just join Tableau. Their refreshers are way higher too
Tableau has much better stock refreshers, culture and higher hiring bar. I've moved to Microsoft because I got much higher offer from them (+30%). I would come back to Tableau if Tableau could match my Microsoft offer (principal level)
Tableau pays significantly better than Microsoft, I've worked at both places. Trying to get a stable company like MSFT to match tableaus offer is having your cake and eating it too. Greedy AF
Setting aside compensation, what do you prefer about MS vs Tableau?
All you can do is try telling the recruiter you’re thinking of walking and that you signed too soon. But it’s not a great position to be in and you could burn that bridge since you signed already. Maybe you want to just take your lumps and join or renege if you don’t want to be at MS
