Posting some questions here for my wife who recently graduated with a PhD in Human Robot Interaction and was looking for guidance in terms of interview prep. Specifically, she wants to know:

What are the general responsibilities of a research scientist at FAANG?

Are these different for different companies and teams, and do they typically require a strong coding background?

Also, what is the interview process generally like for these positions?

With my background in HRI, what are some great non-FAANG companies to apply to?

RS responsibility is to work independently on problems important to the org in general. You are expected to execute research, publish and translate it into products. Google RS requires a job talk and coding interviews. 1-1 interviews are usually research conversations. Coding is a huge plus. Google is a business, not a university so the currency for promotion is impact, not papers. The more you can translate ideas to products, more will be your growth. Most of the RS positions usually go to people who have some sort of connection to Google (have been an intern or student researcher, graduated from a famous group with strong letters, stellar work etc.). Needless to say, publication record needs to be top-notch.
