5 seconds to see if there’s a solid and congruent work history. 5 seconds to see if there are impact and results. Has to be succinct.

This is the second to worst part about the hiring process for software engineers. You can spend hours on a resume and it'll only get looked at for at most 15 seconds.

The worst part is algorithm questions at interviews. Years of enterprise development experience does very little to prepare you to find the longest valid parentheses. You spend years solving problems with a debugger and a search engine only to be judged on your ability to solve a puzzle on paper. So you spend weeks practicing leet code problems, only to have those skills dwindle after a month.

If they're recently employed, not github link makes me think they get enough coding at their job, and enjoy a well balanced life outside of work. Otherwise, a GitHub link in lieu of recent employment is a great look at their experience.

  • Tailor your resume to each position you are applying for. Don't send the same exact resume to everyone. Your resume should be a brief description of how your experience matches up with the desired skill set.

Results ( backed by data if possible), history of increasing responsibility, quality of the companies worked for, demonstrates responsibilities that match those I am looking for.

Also, skip the buzzwords. I don’t want to hear about how detail oriented you are. Show it in your work history, but don’t include all those nonsense words on your resume.

Whether they have the right keywords that match the skills I'm looking for. For my previous job that would've been "machine learning", "python", "spark", to name a few. It's a no starter if they don't have these skills or equivalent.

Since I started looking for a new job, I've written my own tool to make sure I get those keywords tailored to each individual job I'm applying to, automates the guess work of what I should change in my resume. If you're interested lmk, may be useful to others as well
