I know there's been a huge issue around harassment and...forced arbitration(?) there and read recently that the company isn't budging on those issue, but I'm wondering if it really is that bad as a whole. Do riot employees feel like it's more of a media scandal? Do you enjoy working there? Would you actually advise women against joining Riot?
I recently left Riot. My experience (admittedly as a white dude) was really positive. In my part of the organization people reported low levels of harassment and high levels of opportunity no matter what their race or gender. The company as a whole responded to the articles with a really strong desire to stamp these issues out. I do think senior leadership has been pretty weak throughout this. They’ve done little to take responsibility or hold senior people accountable. In reality my day to day was largely unaffected by those senior leaders...and the positives outweighed the negatives by a large margin.
woman of color here and my experience is largely the same as described here.
Life at riot is pretty fucking great - the work is fulfilling and the room to grow and follow your career aspirations is almost limitless. All of the sexual harassment/discrimination stuff us from like 3+ years ago. The people here now are smart, empathetic, and here to ship good video games. I will say there is a vocal minority that stirs stuff up with the media that makes us look really bad - most Rioters see the progress the company has made and are happy to keep building towards a better future. Leadership is equally committed to that future and the road ahead is looking bright.
No, the recent lawsuits about Thomas Vu are not that old, you're thinking of the Gelb stuff. And based on the several-hundred-people following that the walkout brought, plus the dissident discussions in Slack, I would not say the road is looking bright for everyone. Read the *thread* in the most recent RNU question. It's not about stirring media attention to make people look bad. It's about acknowledging others who are suffering and demanding change.
The lawsuits are recent, the events that inspired them are not. If you don't know much about the situation, you probably shouldn't be commenting on it.
Life is great if you are good at office politics.
There are ~25 people (out of close to 3,000) with major concerns who are actively supported by another 100 or so people with fewer concerns but lots of empathy for those ~25. The rest of us care but have had positive experiences so it’s hard for us to relate. Even if we believe their negative experiences are real.
uDxC11 speaks truth. The 125 are amplified/co-opted by the click hungry gaming press and a hopeless industry union effort.
Can confirm. Life at Riot is generally great.
It''s fucking fantastic for me. Wouldn't go anywhere else. I would expect that many of our worst days around sexual harassment look to be behind us, with Vu notably being an odd exception. I've seen 3-4 people exited for harassing women over the last 6 months, so I'd say the company has taken that seriously. I can't explain the current lawsuits, nor why Vu seems to have gotten a pass. Other than that, it seems generally good, trending very positively. I'm hopeful that the Rioters that are feeling disenfranchised will get a win soon. They are really in pain, but I'm also not sure what would be the fix for them (exit Vu?).
+1 Not sure what the end goal is for the protesters. The arbitration bit just seems like something people have latched onto just because it’s something concrete.
A lot of the recent negative media coverage has been pretty depressing. It's hard to have an honest conversation about how this is negatively impacting everyone. Those who try get morally bullied because their suffering < the suffering of the disenfranchised. Other than that life varies from team to team, but overall is pretty good. The area I work in is great if you want a 9-5 with smart nerdy coworkers and solid pay/benefits. It is not fast-paced, but people are still very passionate about what they do and why.
In general, Riot is pretty awesome. I hope that we weed out the bad seeds. Lookup Petrie Multiplier for a decent explanation of how a few bad seeds have a disproportionate effect on a minority. Senior Leadership has a long way to go to rebuild trust but they seem to be up to the task. Engineering culture is pretty decent, sub-FAANG level, as you might expect at a game company, but not too far behind. Amenities at HQ are like a small Google or Facebook office, with Dublin, Seoul and St Louis offices a close second. Istanbul office is also nice from what I hear. I've been here longer than most, and I'm not looking to go anywhere else. I wouldn't advise women against coming to Riot. That said, I am a man. Although there has been some egregious behavior in the past, I don't think that sort of behavior would be overlooked today. I for one have been paying closer attention to what is going on, and I wish nothing but success and happiness for my female and nonbinary colleagues.
In don’t want to downplay anyone’s experience because some women have had rough experiences that are very real to them, but my experience as a woman at Riot has been really good. Honestly, I’ve had a ton of opportunity and still do to this day, and half my team are women (with most in leadership positions) who totally kick ass. I would still encourage women to join Riot. The media is definitely taking some liberties. :/
Riot’s biggest issue is leadership not all those scandals. Riot has a leadership team with mostly zero experiences. CEO/COO/CFO brand new. Tons of producers on new games never ship a game in their life. Tons of first-time people managers. If you want an easy life and just cruise, Riot is great. If you want to work for a company with vision/future, don’t go.
We don’t have a CFO... 🤔
