What’s better: joining Stripe/ Airbnb/ DoorDash etc. at early stage vs 0-2 years before IPO?

If you can turn back time and identify these companies that will become a rocketship of course it's better to join early. The fact that you mentioned those companies is because they have become successful, but it's hard to tell which current early stage startup will become the next Stripe/Airbnb/Doordash.

  • Depends on how much risk you want to take. Earlier == more risk and more upside.

Wondering if there's a general rule of thumb around funding series or valuation that could help you determine a good balance between upside and risk? For example, I joined Airbnb around when it was valued at $30billion (but was still around 4 years away from IPO). Definitely lower risk and not as high upside. Is it kind of a surer bet to join a company once it had been valued as a unicorn?
