Rookie interviewer here asks: at what point does negotiation for TC start?

Oct 12, 2021 4 Comments

Not been in the market for a while hence a little rusty (sorry).

Does negotiation start after offer is presented? When specifically, i.e., offer verbally (by HR), offer issued on paper (electronically), etc?

Thanks for your help,

So technically, it “starts” when you pass interviews and land an offer.

But it starts the first phone screen with the recruiter when they get a feel for how desperate you are, what options you have, how interested you are etc.

If do so-so in interviews, or slip that you hate your team/company and want to change asap, you’ve just negotiated against yourself. If you’re confident and know your worth, have other interviews in the pipeline… you get the idea.

  • If it is California based I would consider asking the employer for a reasonable salary range before you shoot out your first number.

It usually starts during the HR screen when they ask your salary requirements.
