Recruiter told me Google changed the policy for 1st year refreshers

Jan 22, 2020 24 Comments

He told me that refreshers are given on the first year for exceeded ratings, although it is hard to get exceeded on your first year. Can someone confirm?

It sounds like Google has given up trying to compete at the top level in compensation. Here you get a full year’s refresher even if you join in September.

I am seeing too many posts about Google low balling and Google going lower in overall TC. Is it just me or is this what is really happening?
Why is Google trying to move out of FANG?

There will always be many many fewer top TC jobs than not top tc jobs. If you decide to jump and are important to google, they can always give you a great offer to stay, no?

There are many fewer top TC jobs than not top TC jobs, but there are probably more top TC jobs than there are Google jobs, and most Google engineers can pass their hiring bars.

Tbh I probably won't even bother trying to get a counter-offer when I leave. Gonna try to interview for L+1 and I feel like you'd have to be pretty indispensable to get promo via counter-offer

That means if you join in April 2020, your first refresh is April 2022. That's crap.

One way that Google could become competitive again is for people to stop licking Google’s balls. Putting Google on a pedestal and joining Google at any cost mentality has made Google realize that they could easily lowball people and cut corners, and people would still run toward it. Google ain’t what it once used to be. I’ve been reading countless Blind posts related to Google, and the following seem true:

    1. Google lowballs and downgrades levels
    2. People go to Google for WLB/name
    3. Google and boring work are associated

So if you think nowadays you can join Google, and get organic gourmet meals, free everything under the sun, innovative work, top TC, etc., you’re delusional! Those days are long gone. Google is a giant corporation with well established infrastructure (money making machine) that only needs some regular maintenance. Sure there are still some interesting projects, but mostly reserved for top notch engineers. So if name and WLB are important to you, take the lowball offer and join, otherwise stay away.

Yes. But even with that, it's less than normal refresher and is prorated. Mine was 25k for 6 months as L4 with EE
