Culture at Disney+

Dec 22, 2020 5 Comments

Saw a job post that i want to apply.
How is the culture there? How is their engineering culture? Are engineers considered as 2nd citizens (because the parent company disney isn’t tech) or are they like tech start up?
How is WLB and compensation and benefit?
Any recent layoff?

  • Culture is good. Engineers are 1st class citizens and WLB is mostly good but depends on team. Compensation is above average, but not near FAANG level at all. Nobody is saying it officially, but all signs point to layoffs soon with the merge of Hulu and DSS.

    • They are taking the best apps from each platform so I don’t think either side is more or less likely

Yeah, I think you can flip a coin about layoffs or not right now. Leadership keeps saying that in order to compete with Netflix we’ll need everyone, since Netflix is bigger than our engineering orgs. Which I kind of believe.

Overall engineering culture is good. All the DSS folks I’ve met have been really smart and kind.

WLB is super tough right now as we are in a period of tremendous growth. But the people at DSS and Hulu are all smart and kind.
