The tightening of immigration constraints for medium and high qualified individuals during the last 20 years in the US will have a huge impact on the country in the long run. Not today, not in 5 years, but in a generation. And by the moment it becomes apparent it may be too late to reverse the trend. It is not only about the utterly nonsensical lotteries to distribute visas among qualified workers (a process that should be strictly based on merit) but the fact that brilliant and hungry workers are handcuffed to be cogs in big companies where they have an impact of a tenth of what they could have in other places, or starting their own venture. And even in the cases where it is legally possible, fear and risk-aversion percolates into the immigrants mentality in a way that is hard to imagine if you have not been there. All of this is wasted potential for a country aspiring to be the World's reference. It may look like irrelevant because right now it is way ahead in technology innovation, but I believe this wasted resources will add up, until we find ourselves behind in the race asking what happened. This week I learned a talented, hardworking peer will have to leave after not winning the H1B lottery for the third time in a row. A person with US studies, 3y of experience in Silicon Valley and instrumental for the company. I am not talking about fairness here, but even from a patriotic standpoint, this a loss for the country since it damages its technological and economical development.
Look at you thinking that one's entitled to a job just cause of their place of birth @salesforce
Wow what a civilized and healthy discussion about immigration on blind!
Thanks for showing empathy @wa2f5 We lack it in the world and non-existent on blind. I know it's not fair and i have gone through so much stress over visa that i keep one bag packed. I hope your teammate atleast got a transfer instead of having to find another job. Sometimes it feels like a slave. It's a sad reality that even after paying taxes and following rules for last 14 yrs i have no hope to even get a green card in next 2-3 years. And people who apply right now have to wait for 150+ years to get green card. I would say it's a silver lining that he didn't have to go through this agonizing process. I know someone would say I signed up for this. And yes I did voluntarily but the point is it doesn't have to be this way. I perform the best at my job when I don't have the sword of visa approvals and green card and date until visa is valid hanging on my neck.
US’s rein as world power is coming to an end. In 20 years from now US will be what Russia is now.
Agreed US needs a merit based immigration system that focuses on bringing in more talented immigrants. But it’s impossible in the near future. Employment based immigration is not a priority for Ds and some like Sanders and Durbin have even attacked programs like H1B. It’s surprising to me when they say H1Bs are stealing American jobs and lower wages while pushing for granting citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants like they will not take up any jobs. To be clear I support giving the undocumented folk legal status (not necessarily citizenship because then you are awarding those breaking the rules). I don’t have high hopes that Biden is going to improve the immigration system but I believe he will atleast not make it worse like Trump.
Looks like we like to prioritize illegals over those who come here legally and are left waiting even longer. America needs foreign talent to keep going forward.
Indians like to say that a lot specially those in the backlog but we of all people should be sympathetic to the illegal folk specially DACA. I believe some of them deserve legal status and we should happy if that happens. Of course giving citizenship to millions of undocumented immigrants is a crazy idea.
To be clear I think DACA folk deserve a citizenship path but rest of the illegal folk should only be given legal status not citizenship
China is already fucking us hard !!
us?
Probably USA/US. GDP PPP wise it’s already ahead
No hope. D don't care. R make it worse. So absolutely no hope.
It's discouraging to see it happening but it is exactly as you say
At least a big part of it is because Democrats think they'll get vastly more votes, especially in Texas, by spending that time and effort on getting and making illegals "legal" rather than focusing on STEM imports, which are going to end up in Democrat-dominated states such as CA and WA.
And those correlate exactly with the type of positions which need to be filled, sure
Salesforce is an idiot.
