I just got promoted to L5. How soon can I transfer to fb as E6? What can I do to make a stronger case for myself when I do eventually get around to interviewing? I can wait for a year or so, but if I have to wait longer than that, then I might as well just shoot for L6 at goog.

  • It is too ambitious to consider yourself as an E6 candidate with master’s + 3 yoe

Ya people get FB E5 with less than 5 YOE. It’s the classic employees being told one thing at one time or another and believing it.

I’ll admit E6 seems like a stretch though. I’m not sure how you get there right away. But would love advice from someone with better knowledge.

    • Of course they can. I’m just sharing the official rule, of course op can be the exception with his/her highly differentiated and accomplished L5 title.

Why don't you apply to FB and see what they say?

What about how you approach your work makes you think you’re ready for E6/L6? Sounds like you’re early in L5. Process hurdles aside, do you have clear reason you think you could be operating at that level? Do you have projects, experience, or artifacts to demonstrate it?

That's great. My friend with 4 yoe got l3 and not yet l4. Facebook invited him for e5 interviews.

I hope it serves as a data point.

  • Instead of #years, you should think about whether you are ready to be E6.

The bottom rung of FB E6 should be equivalent to the top rung of Google L5 (see levels.fyi). Also, companies tend to down level external hires to avoid risk (though, FB is not as bad as Google at this). Considering all this, you should be at a point where you are very close to getting promoted to L6 before you can be considered for E6.

Having said that, if you can convince FB that you've been working on projects with large scope for a while and you impress the pants off your interviewers, you could be considered for E6 soon. Really depends on how you sell yourself.

This is very helpful! So it's just a matter of describing my current scope and impact that is if L6 caliber? I think I do have some L6 level work already. And I hope I will get some more exposure over the next year. I can certainly cite this during interviews.

How do I convince the recruiter to put me into the L6 interview loop?

Also how would fb verify the experience that I claim?

    • Yes, but don't overdo it. If you join FB as E6 before you are ready, you will struggle and could get PIPed.
Ask your manager about promo path to L6 and where s/he thinks you need to improve before being promoted. That will give you an idea of where you are with respect to L6.
