In 1 year, I’ll be looking to move to a new city.

Where should I go? I will be 25 with 4 YOE. I expect to have 700k or so in assets by then and my current TC is ~330k.

TC and saving is not the priority now as I am young and have a good nest egg. As long as I can make money and advance my career, all is good.

Options:

Seattle: save money on taxes, still west coast. I love skiing and have friends here. I also have a car so this would be convenient.

New York: partying, dating, city life. I’m not the biggest fan of NYC life, but it could be good to try for a year. Not as many close friends here as Bay Area or Seattle.

Singapore: explore Asia, learn about SEA tech. I am really excited about spending time here but it could be randomizing and bad for career. I have no ancestral ties to Asia which is why coming here while younger is appealing.

London: explore Europe, learn about European tech. I am European so it can be a good opportunity to meet more of my brethren. Again, might incur a TC hit, although I know friends who have gotten solid offers (250k or so).

Other: comment

Immigration is not an issue as I have US and EU passports.

You're young, affluent, and living in a pandemic. Singapore sounds like a great option as the effects of covid are the smallest of the few. Going abroad is great when young, but London is doing horrible right now.

My buddy just got 230k TC in London for 2 YOE.

Other friends have gotten 200k+ TC in Singapore.

If I can make 200k to live somewhere new, that’s good enough for me.

I might have a million dollars net worth by the time I’m moving. My family has enough $ collectively and I can always come back to the US for a high TC job with a year of experience abroad.

I would think of it as getting paid to study abroad. Even $150k is good.

    • They're outliers. I tried so hard to even get less than 200k for those locations and couldn't get one. And i have a lot more experience than your buddies.
UK is usually 100k GBP; SG is usually 130-150k SGD

  • I am from Singapore. Good city living. Clean, efficient, excellent public transport, and food is amazing. I laugh whenever someone refers to SF as a world class city and ask me why I prefer living in south bay. Cons are crowded, humid, and low tech salaries. Feel free to dm if you have more questions

    • Agree with everything. I would emphasise on the low tech salaries. Coming from SF, this will be too low. If OP is prepared for it, he can enjoy cultural and culinary aspects that Singapore offers
