SAP Concur or Adobe

I’ve been at Adobe for four years. I have an offer for SAP Concur. Financially, it’d be more money (by about $10K with more bonus %) and there would be opportunities to advance. It appears my hours would decrease - per team’s conversation - and I wouldn’t work weekends nor work with a team in India (getting rid of my late meetings). I would lose my forthcoming sabbatical in 2021 at Adobe along with our annual two shutdowns. I am considered senior at Adobe and if I wanted to advance, I would probably have to move to San Jose, which I don’t want to do. There have been several reorgs on my team that worry me and my spouse and I are adopting a child within the year, so this is causing a huge conflict to accept the offer or stay. Would you stay at Adobe or jump ship to join SAP Concur?

TC? And YOE?

The new total comp would be $168K versus current $139K. My last batch of RSUs at Adobe vests this month with no future RSUs. 20 YOE this summer, non-engineer.

What’s the total TC % bump from Adobe to SAP Concur ? Are you moving locations ? A sabbatical coming up, if you can plan for it beginning of 2021, is something you don’t want to give up on. That time off is lot more valuable than a meager jump in TC right now. You can rather use sabbatical to prepare for interviews to get a much better offer. Sabbatical will be perfect if you guys are adopting a child this year later. Stay with Adobe I feel specially during the current economic situation.

20% jump is not bad I would say. If I were you, I would let it go and buy time and sit out at ADBE for another 1 year. For me, spending quality time with my family and sabbatical is more imp if I am not in sudden need of making more $. A year from now, the market should be more steady and you will get better/healthier opportunities even if you may not get RSUs at the lowest price like right now. Question is which one you prefer - 20% jump to cheap discounted RSUs in SAP giving up sabbatical earned after 5 yrs at ADBE or buy 1 year time, use the sabbatical and current time with family and look for better opportunities ? Also, with my current work exp in SAP, I think you can easily get much better opportunities moving from ADBE To something in San Jose in a year.

Concur is a great company despite SAP. They have done so well that SAP Germany has agreed to leave them alone

Concur has great WLB. Quality of work varies significantly based on org, at least on the SWE side. It's stable. SAP has tons of cash and concur is still growling quickly. Yeah, they're exposed to the business travel market which is shut down right now but you don't handicap a strategic growth engine for short term savings if you're SAP.

As a former Softie, thank you for your logical response. I was worried about the travel industry’s effects right now, but I was assured my pending new job is safe. I hate to admit I was concerned about my brand choice - leaving Adobe for SAP Concur, but I realized that, unless I move to San Jose, I have no upward mobility and I was not granted refreshers at Adobe despite receiving stellar reviews (again) as well as the highest raise and bonus. And, at the end of the day, it’s a very good offer for me to leave. I will miss my current manager and team, but the job is no longer a challenge.

Quality of engineering talent at Concur is a bit lower than MSFT and the reputation a bit lower as well, no doubt. But I really enjoyed my 3 years at Concur and would go back someday. Cash compensation is in line with Microsoft but of course they can't match MSFT's equity. Going to Concur won't hurt your ability to get interviews at top companies in the slightest. Plus, since the bar is loeer you could come in as a high performer. And at the more senior levels, high performers get refreshers on par with Microsoft. But only top performers.

The job is going to be with Expense, so excited (and nervous, given what’s going on at the same time). I did try going back to Microsoft, but no interviews - probably for the best, as I was bored when I worked there.
