Is the SCOT team (Supply Chain Optimization Technologies) team good at Amazon? Got an offer from there (SDE), but it seems a step down in all aspects (63 -> L5, TC goes down, Azure -> SCOT). The only reasons I am considering? 1. Not happy with current manager. Have made a lot of noise about that with the manager as well as skip, but no changes noticed. 2. It would be good as an external exposure - to see what’s the culture like outside of MSFT and outside of the cloud game, etc. I’ve heard the benefits there suck big time. And given the above reasons to “not leave”, really hoping somebody here who’s made the switch from Msft to Amzn will show me the silver lining here? Frankly, really interested in the home automation team, so would use this as foot in the door, get to the next level, and then try and switch to Smart Homes (heard growth within Alexa etc teams isn’t easy?). Worth it? Thoughts? #amazon, #scot, #msft
Forecasting in SCOT is good. They predict the product demand for all products. Significantly challenging if you're interested in machine learning / neural networks.
Yeah, have heard SOME teams within Scot do ML-related work. Interested in those. Could this be used as a base to learn about and get into ML/AI, and then move to Alexa or so?
Could work.
It’s not really a high “visibility” org. So I would high recommend finding a different team on Azure or find something in AWS
Definitely not interested in AWS given the horror stories of WLB. Not opposed to working hard, but need a good balance. And have heard the work culture there isn’t good, esp of coming from Msft or Google. Yeah would consider staying put if the manager story is sorted out, or within Msft if a good fit is found, but usually internal moves don’t change pay etc much (of course it wouldn’t be a pay cut ;)).
AWS isn’t all that bad. The stories are a bit exaggerated. Of course there are managers who are terrible but doesn’t also exist at msft too. Worst case you can boomerang back at a higher level. AWS will give your resume a bigger boost than supply chain
Bruh why you leaving cloud to go do supply chain? You exchanging gold for tin. If you're leaving Azure, find a job in AWS.
AWS would be a no-no for their sucky WLB. Like I said, really interested in Smart homes. It would be a good shift away from this domain. And would also likely be a good glimpse into the culture outside of MSFT. But this is not a move of desperation.
I don’t know about the WLB at SCOT, hence asking here. All I’ve heard is that it is bad at AWS.
I work with SCOT frequently. It's a huge org. Unfortunately for you this makes your question impossible to answer.
Thanks! What teams do you work with within SCOT? Overall opinion?
Pros: good WLB; can learn skills and build mind set of data driven decision making - very valuable if you want to become a leader or start your own business. Cons: slow career growth; reputation not as good as as AWS
Thanks! How about the “plan” of switching within Amazon after, say, a year with this team? Or is it better to just directly interview with and get to the team I’d like to join anyway?
Better to join and then switch later. You can interview with as many teams as you want as there are no record left and it's much less stressful.
Whats ur yoe? With the new promo process at Amazon, i’ve been seeing too many L6 promos under 5-6 years; and new L6 now sort of maps to L62/3 - L65. I would recommend moving only if are getting a big bump in the pay or for an L6 offer. And personally i would prefer Azure over SCOT given the opportunities available in the seattle area in that space. FYI, i was at MS before and now a PE at Amazon.
Thanks. I am at 7yoe. Got L5 offer, but the team says getting to L6 shouldn’t be too difficult (eligible in the next review cycle 2020). Completely understand the issues leaving Azure to go to SCOT, but m just so frustrated with some of the management issues here. Maybe should move to a different team within Azure. Did you go from MS to Amazon directly as PE? What was your level when you left MS?
What’s the change in TC? Definitely sounds like a bad idea. If you have friends within Amazon, I’d use them to try and find a better team fit as L6. They could look up tech survey results, oncall quality, etc for you.
Thanks. Yes I am already engaging friends at Amazon for such info. The change in TC is negative (i.e. losing money).
👍🏼 Sounds like you got this. Good luck! I was interested in how much it went down, but I understand if you want to keep that undisclosed.
Don't move to Amazon with a pay cut. Try the other usual suspects- G, U, FB, Apple etc. Or if you are interested in Amazon, interview again in 6 months time & negotiate a pay raise.
Yeah, that’s what I am thinking also. I don’t need to move just because. Not desperate to, so can look some more.
You are the first person who would even consider moving to Amazon at any where near their current salary. It sure does not make any sense but people do weird things when they are unhappy.
Not considering. Asking for opinions and feedback. And the general internal move policies etc.
Not a very good org. Not worth the down-level and TC drop definitely.
Thanks. “Not a very good org” in what aspects? Could you elaborate please?
