I am hearing horrific stories of L6 SDMs getting dev list 2 or 3 months into the new job (external hires) Is this kind of culture dependant on the team or is it an amazon thing? Besides picking a good team, how does one survive in such a cut throat culture. TC: 360k ish
You mean SDM getting into devlist?
2-3 mo? that’s fast!
Not really. You know quickly who is good and who is not.
SDMs can jeopardize a whole team fairly quickly. If you don't suck, you'll stick around.
What's a devlist?
Amazon should just raise the bar in their sdm interviews rather than putting folks through pip misery. Any SDM in a tech company should be able to code.
It's possible for someone to become an SDM without being able to code?
Yes. My previous SDM was managed out (my skip told th: "hey, you know this is not working out, get out with your own feet, honorably" and they followed suit). They knew how to code, they were able to be thoughtful in design reviews, but was an awful people manager, and the team was struggling. Ignoring them made us more productive.
Dont resist ur boss , my friend got laid off coz he stood up for his team and didnt let his boss put a dev on his team on dev list for a minor production bug. He got put on dev list for not having a bias for action lol
The culture is so brutal. You can really misuse and abuse the LP and Devlist anyone with them
LP?
Leadership principles
Suck up is how
