what are the difference between SDM L6 and L7 at Amazon? is there a difference in terms of responsibility and compensation?
Disclaimer: Don't know how true this is because I heard from a 3 YOE engineer who is really close with my ex-manager who got promoted to L7 in < 6 months of being a manager He says main difference in L6 and L7 is number of people they see. Our manager realized this and has literally hired > 25 people in the last year while picking up promotion. Instead of managing people he's now managing managers who manage people. Great politician Compensation bands are definitely different. I can't remember them correctly but if you search blind you can find it.
L6 is a first line manager - manages 1-2 two-pizza teams. L7 is a manager or managers. There is a significant difference in TC aa the scope can differ massively.
How much is TC for L7? $450k
Have seen L7 SDM offer here recently up to $600k bay area.
Thanks. What’s the best case for L6 in Seattle? Also recruiter mentioned they don’t differentiate when it comes to location. Is that correct?
Check levels.fyi. you will see that the upside on L6 SDM is more flat. 350? They do adjust for loc. Bay area higher than Seattle. Filter for that in levels.fyi ... it is a bit hard to find the role dropdown.
It can go over 400 at L6 SDM. Source: Am L6 but not an SDM.
As far as I know they are identical. The story I heard is that Amazon just had too many numbers and wanted to use more of them.
Perfect answer. We still have number 9 that we have to use in the next 1 year too.
