I’ve been offered a position as a SETI at Google for a team that writes internal tooling. I’ve read all the SETI threads here on Blind and keep seeing people say it’s just a test role, and that it’s perceived like that outside of Google. ...but based on what I’m hearing about my potential team that’s not the case. Can ex-SETIs and current SETIs comment on how they were perceived when trying to find a job within google and elsewhere, and if the SETI title truly “demoted” them when looking elsewhere?
What is seti
Another name for Microsoft SDET

There is a test engineer role which is similar to sdet. Seti is a programmer that programs internal tools. Same coding bar as swe.
I only see this answer from current SETIs at Google. SWEs seem to imply that SRE is more equivalent to SWE and that a jump from SETI to SWE is very hard. Is that true?
It depends on the role. Since SWEs require more design so may interview for that. But moving from SETI to SWE isn't much different than going the other way.
You won't have the satisfaction/pain of writing product code. That can be a good or a bad thing depending on your perception.
I’m a SETI (Tools and Infrastructure). I haven’t written a single test for someone else’s code. I work on a lot of interesting data analysis and technical problems.
